When Africa is discussed in global discourse, it is often framed through the lens of development challenges and economic constraints. Yet, on the ground, the reality is far more complex and far more promising. It is a young, fast-evolving continent steadily moving toward a different future—one driven by knowledge, education, and strategic partnerships that are redefining opportunity for the next generation, with an increasingly visible role played by the United Arab Emirates as a key partner in advancing education and building global bridges.
In Mozambique, particularly in the capital city Maputo, these transformations are becoming tangible through educational institutions operating under Aga Khan Schools, building holistic models of learning that combine academics, life skills, and personal development, despite the structural and developmental challenges faced by many countries across the continent.

During our visit to Maputo, the experience was not simply about attending a formal event. It was a window into a reality that stands in contrast to many preconceived narratives about this part of the world.
Within this context, Maputo hosted the signing of a strategic Memorandum of Understanding between Aga Khan Schools and Royal Roads University – Ras Al Khaimah Campus, a step that reflects the expanding educational bridges connected to the UAE. The agreement aims to enhance access to higher education, strengthen academic collaboration, and open global pathways for students to join leading universities around the world.
The event was attended by the Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates to Mozambique, alongside senior representatives of Aga Khan Schools, including Mr. Mahmud Charania, Ms. Nilofer Lakhani, Mr. Benoit, Mr. Ghulam Juma, and Mr. Rui Carimo, as well as several distinguished diplomatic and educational figures.
A Strategic Partnership with a Global Educational Vision
This agreement is not merely an academic collaboration; it represents a long-term strategic framework designed to build sustainable educational pathways that connect students to global opportunities, while enhancing their academic and leadership capabilities.
It also focuses on developing joint programs and academic exchanges, improving the quality of education and expanding opportunities for students across Africa and beyond.

Aga Khan Academy Maputo: A Holistic Educational Model in a Developing Context
During our visit to the Aga Khan Academy in Maputo, it became evident that we were observing a fully integrated educational model designed to provide a supportive learning environment within a context shaped by developmental challenges.
The facilities available to students reflect a comprehensive educational experience, including well-equipped classrooms, science laboratories, and a wide range of sports facilities such as a swimming pool, sports field, and gym, in addition to dedicated spaces for cultural and creative activities.

The presence of such facilities in a city like Maputo represents a significant value-add, particularly given the broader infrastructure challenges faced by many educational systems across the continent. However, the real importance lies not in the existence of these facilities alone, but in how effectively they are used to support learning and develop students’ skills.

Student Boarding: A Supportive Environment Beyond the Classroom
Beyond the academic environment, Aga Khan Schools also provides a well-structured student boarding facility that offers a safe and stable living environment, supporting students’ academic focus and personal development.
A particularly notable contribution comes from Ms. Shabana, the dedicated boarding supervisor, whose commitment to student welfare and educational care stands out. What makes her role even more meaningful is that she is herself a graduate of Royal Roads University, reflecting a continuous cycle of education, empowerment, and leadership returning to serve future generations.

Sustainable Living and Student Wellbeing
An important and distinctive dimension of the Aga Khan Schools ecosystem in Maputo is the thoughtful approach to student wellbeing and nutrition, which is closely overseen by Ms. Nilofer Lakhani. Her attention to detail in ensuring a high standard of food provision reflects a broader philosophy that education extends beyond classrooms into daily life, health, and overall student experience.
What makes this aspect particularly remarkable is the emphasis on in-house, organically grown food production across extensive hectares of land surrounding the school. During our visit, we observed firsthand how a significant portion of the food served to students is cultivated on-site, reinforcing a sustainable and self-sufficient model of living.

The produce includes a variety of fresh crops such as lemons, cabbage, passion fruit, and sweet potatoes, all grown within the school’s agricultural spaces. This farm-to-table approach is not only about nutrition, but also about creating awareness among students regarding sustainability, food systems, and environmental responsibility.
Ms. Nilofer’s direct supervision of this system ensures quality, consistency, and alignment with student wellbeing standards. More importantly, she has actively integrated students into this ecosystem, allowing them to participate in agricultural activities, understand food production processes, and engage with the land as part of their learning experience.
This initiative adds a unique educational dimension to the school environment, where students are not only consumers of healthy food but also contributors to a living, sustainable system. It strengthens their connection to nature, builds awareness of responsibility, and fosters a deeper appreciation of community and shared resources within the Aga Khan Schools environment.

Academic Admissions Leadership and the Creation of Opportunity
Another key figure during the visit was Ms. Shaliza, Dean of Admissions at Aga Khan Schools in Maputo, who plays a central role in shaping students’ educational journeys from the moment they enter the school through to their transition into higher education.
She works on building a merit-based admissions system that identifies individual potential and channels it into appropriate academic pathways. Her role reflects the school’s philosophy that education is not confined to the classroom, but begins from the very first interaction with a student, through a deep understanding of their abilities and aspirations.

The Foundation of a Strategic Partnership: A Key Driver of Development
In the context of this landmark event, the role of Mr. Ghulam Juma stands out as a central pillar within the Aga Khan Schools education ecosystem, where he leads critical efforts in resource development and partnership building across its educational institutions.
Throughout the visit, his presence was marked by meticulous coordination and exceptional organization, from arranging the on-ground school visit in Maputo to facilitating meetings with students, faculty members, and senior leadership.
Beyond operational excellence, he is recognized as one of the key minds behind the foundation of this strategic partnership between Aga Khan Schools and Royal Roads University – Ras Al Khaimah Campus, having contributed to its early conceptual development and ongoing expansion.
His work has helped shape this collaboration into a structured educational pathway that directly benefits students, linking global academic opportunities with local educational needs, ensuring long-term impact and continuity across generations.

Human Moments at the Heart of Education
One of the most memorable and human moments of the visit came during a conversation with a teacher who is also a parent of a student at Aga Khan Schools in Maputo. He spoke with a warm smile, almost laughing as he recalled an old saying from his days in Syria.
He said that back then, if someone was traveling far away, people would jokingly ask: “Where are you going? To Mozambique?”, referring to it as if it were the end of the world, a distant place that felt almost unreachable or unknown. Then he paused, still smiling, and reflected on how life had completely changed his perspective. What once was an expression of distance and imagination had become his lived reality. He continued: “But God brought us here to discover a completely different reality at Aga Khan Schools in Maputo. We found real education, strong academic quality, suitable boarding facilities, and a supportive environment for my child. We also found genuine encouragement from the school to develop his sporting talent, participate in events and competitions, and most importantly, we found an opportunity to build a future we had never imagined before.”
What made this moment truly powerful was the contrast between perception and reality between a place once spoken of as “far away” and a lived experience that became a turning point in how he sees education, opportunity, and the future of his child.

Graduation Day: Real Outcomes of Educational Investment
At the Class of 2026 graduation ceremony, the outcomes of this educational model became clearly visible, with several students receiving scholarships to leading global universities.
One student was awarded a scholarship to the University of Toronto in Canada, another received a full scholarship in Hong Kong, a third secured a fully funded opportunity in the United Kingdom, and another student progressed to an academic pathway in Dubai.
These results were not accidental; they were the outcome of a long-term, structured educational system focused on developing students academically, personally, and athletically over time.

Leadership That Creates Impact
Behind this model stands a committed educational leadership team, led by Ms. Annia Dear, Principal of the school, who has successfully built a balanced educational environment that equips students with the tools they need to succeed.
This approach is reflected in daily practices such as personalized academic monitoring, structured mentorship programs, and student-led initiatives that strengthen leadership, communication, and decision-making skills.
The impact of this system is clearly visible in outcomes, with students consistently gaining admission to top-tier global universities as a result of a long-term, structured developmental journey rather than short-term academic performance alone.

At the institutional level, Aga Khan Schools leadership is deeply engaged in ensuring quality, sustainability, and adaptability of educational models across different contexts in Africa and beyond.
A particularly important dimension of this ecosystem is its integration with international partnerships, including growing collaborations with institutions connected to the United Arab Emirates, which are expanding student access to global academic pathways and creating real bridges between Africa and leading global education hubs.
This form of leadership is not simply about managing a school; it is about shaping long-term impact developing a generation of students who are globally competitive while remaining grounded in their identities and capable of contributing meaningfully to their communities.

A Community Grounded in Values and a Commitment to Education
During our visit, we had the opportunity to meet several individuals whose journeys and interests reflect a deep belief in the transformative power of education and its role in building stronger communities and creating opportunities. Among them were Dinesh, Shelina, and their son Tawfiq, a family whose outlook is shaped by a strong appreciation for lifelong learning, cultural understanding, and meaningful human connection.
What stood out most was not a particular achievement, but rather a shared perspective on the importance of empowering people and recognizing education as one of the most powerful tools for positive change. Our conversations reflected values of collaboration, openness, and a genuine appreciation for the role education plays in shaping future generations.
In many successful educational ecosystems, progress is driven not only by institutions and leaders, but also by individuals and families who believe in the value of learning and its ability to strengthen communities and expand opportunities. Meeting this family during our visit was a reminder that lasting impact often begins with a commitment to knowledge, a spirit of engagement, and a shared vision for a brighter future for generations to come.

More Than an Agreement: A Shared Vision for the Future
The Memorandum of Understanding between Aga Khan Schools and Royal Roads University – Ras Al Khaimah Campus represents a strategic step toward a more interconnected educational future, enabling students to transition from local contexts to global academic platforms with confidence and capability.
From Maputo, one message became clear: when vision, commitment, and opportunity align, education becomes a powerful force capable of transforming challenges into possibilities and shaping generations that will lead change from Africa to the world through knowledge bridges extending from the UAE across continents.

A Personal Reflection: What This Visit Meant to Me
This visit left a deep and lasting impression on me, far beyond its formal purpose. It was not only an educational journey, but an emotional one shaped by encounters with students from Syria, Mozambique, and many other countries from around the world, each carrying their own story, ambition, and hope.
What stayed with me most was the sense of connection that transcended geography and background. In one place, I saw students from entirely different cultures coming together under one shared purpose: education.
My message to them was simple, but heartfelt that I will return again, and next time I hope to spend more time with them, to truly experience their daily life, their studies, their activities, and the rhythm of a place that feels alive with learning, joy, and purpose.
There is something deeply special about this environment a place filled with knowledge, care, and a strong sense of belonging. It carries the feeling of a family and a closely connected community, unified under one umbrella: education, and Aga Khan Schools identity.
It is this sense of unity across cultures, nationalities, and aspirations that makes this experience not just memorable, but transformative.
