Warner Bros. Discovery has partnered with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to unveil Good To Know, an innovative series that illuminates the role of nuclear science in addressing global challenges. Premiering today on the Discovery Channel, this educational initiative will reach 44 million households across 30 countries in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

The first installment features five one-minute films that demystify nuclear applications in tackling pressing issues such as microplastics, cancer treatment, food insecurity, water scarcity, and industrial contamination. Crafted collaboratively by the IAEA video team and Warner Bros. Discovery editors, these concise stories showcase nuclear solutions in diverse locations like Monaco, India, Austria, Costa Rica, and the Czech Republic.

IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi emphasized the program’s importance, stating, “Not enough people realize the transformative power of nuclear science. Beyond safeguarding nuclear safety, we are using science to combat climate change, improve health, and enhance food security. This series is a call to hope and action.”

Future episodes promise deeper insights into the role of nuclear techniques in combating climate change, such as tracking carbon sequestration in coastal areas, reducing ocean acidification, and innovating pest control methods without chemicals.

Global Stories of Nuclear Innovation

Each film in the series provides a window into groundbreaking nuclear technologies:

  • Microplastics Pollution: Researchers use radiotracers to study how microplastics move through marine ecosystems, offering clues to mitigate this global problem.
  • Cancer Care: Advances in stereotactic radiation therapy now target tumors with millimeter precision, improving treatment outcomes with fewer side effects.
  • Food Security: Nuclear-induced mutations in crops have led to varieties resistant to drought and disease, bolstering global food supplies.
  • Water Management: By analyzing isotopic rainwater signatures, nuclear scientists are helping governments optimize water resources amid climate challenges.
  • Pollution Cleanup: Electron beam technology is revolutionizing the removal of industrial contaminants, enabling cleaner water release into the environment.

A Shared Vision

Najat Mokhtar, Head of the IAEA’s Nuclear Sciences and Applications Department, expressed pride in the collaboration: “This series highlights how science drives progress and empowers countries to meet their development goals.”

Jamie Cooke, Warner Bros. Discovery’s Executive Vice President for Central Europe, the Middle East, and Turkey, echoed the sentiment: “Using our platform to tell these compelling stories aligns with our commitment to drive social good.”

About the IAEA

Known as the “Atoms for Peace and Development” organization, the IAEA is a leader in fostering the safe and peaceful use of nuclear technologies. From enhancing cancer care to combating plastic pollution, the Agency supports global progress through science.

With Good To Know, Warner Bros. Discovery and the IAEA invite audiences to witness how nuclear innovation shapes a brighter, more sustainable future.
