I used to struggle with emotional eating during some of the most stressful times in my life. Becoming a health coach taught me how to truly tune into my body’s signals and understand its real needs — and that has made a huge difference in my overall health and wellbeing. In this article, I’ll share the core principles of integrative nutrition that can help you embrace a healthy, sustainable lifestyle. I’ll also show you how, at HealthyNourita, we support you with the right tools to build your own holistic health system — one that honors your body, mind, and emotions.
What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the words “Holistic Health”? I know — it’s not a word you hear every day, and it might even sound a bit unfamiliar or abstract. But here’s the surprise: you’re probably already practicing it without even realizing it. Yes, really! Holistic health isn’t a new trend or a fancy category of wellness. At its core, it’s about embracing mindfulness — in your eating habits, your lifestyle, and your daily choices. In The Healing Self, Chopra and Tanzi (2018) define mindfulness as “the process of actively noticing new things, letting go of fixed mindsets, and responding to new observations with awareness”. Along the same lines, the Institute for Integrative Nutrition explains holistic health as an approach that considers the whole person — mind, body, and soul. In other words, true health isn’t limited to the physical body. It also includes your emotional state, mental clarity, spiritual connection, relationships, and the environment you live in.

At HealthyNourita, we offer our clients the opportunity to create their own integrative nutrition toolkit to kickstart a truly holistic health journey. During our discovery call, we take the time to deeply understand each client’s current health concerns, challenges, and personal goals. From there, we co-create a tailored path—whether it’s focused on emotional eating, hormonal balance, or gut health support.
This personalized approach is rooted in the holistic philosophy of seeing the client as a whole person—honoring the physical, emotional, and mental aspects of wellness to foster long-term transformation. Whether it’s healing the body through mindful eating or bringing balance to hormones for renewed energy and clarity, our goal is to support women in embracing all dimensions of their wellbeing.
In addition to one-on-one coaching, we also host focused workshops on key topics such as emotional eating, syncing with hormonal rhythms, and developing mindful eating habits. These sessions empower women with practical tools, knowledge, and community support—helping them reconnect with their bodies and take meaningful steps toward lasting wellness.
Everything we do at HealthyNourita is guided by the belief that true health is well-rounded—and that deep, lasting healing begins from within.

As an IIN alumna, HealthyNourita takes a different approach from that of a traditional nutritionist. It’s not about preaching nutrition facts or overwhelming you with dietary theories. Instead, the focus is on the unique value of integrative nutrition’s core principles — the foundation of a truly holistic health journey. At the heart of our method are three main principles: bio-individuality, primary food, and secondary food. These concepts guide everything we do, helping each client find what works best for their body, their life, and their goals.

Bio-Individuality
When I first introduce this core principle to my clients, I often get confused looks—and I understand why. We’ve been conditioned to believe in a “one-size-fits-all” approach when it comes to diets and nutrition programs. But before practicing this concept, people need to truly understand it. In fact, according to IIN, bio-individuality is the number one foundational principle of integrative nutrition. It means that everybody has different needs—what works for you may not work for someone else.
That’s why we say holistic health is bio-individual—in other words, it’s personalized. At HealthyNourita, we’ve designed our coaching into two main paths: Emotional Eating and Hormonal Harmony. However, the way each program is delivered depends entirely on the client’s unique needs, lifestyle, and goals. Everything is tailored—because no two women are exactly alike. As Joshua Rosenthal, the founder of IIN, says: “One person’s food is another person’s poison.” That quote perfectly captures why we begin with bio-individuality. The next two core principles—Primary Food and Secondary Food—are built upon this foundation.

Primary Food
When I say the term “primary food,” you might wonder: Is this a new food group I haven’t heard of? Or maybe an old one with a fancy new name? Well, it’s neither of those. Primary food is everything that nourishes you off your the plate. It’s the kind of nourishment we can’t touch but absolutely can’t live without.
To be more specific, primary food includes the essential areas of life that directly impacts your overall wellbeing. As IIN explains, “we call it primary food because wellness goes beyond the food we eat.” And as García and Miralles beautifully put it in Ikigai (2017),” food alone won’t help you live longer—the real secret lies in smiling and enjoying life”.
Primary food is made up of 12 key areas, represented in a tool called the Circle of Life. These include spirituality, creativity, finances, career, education, health, physical activity, home cooking, home environment, relationships, social life, and joy.
At HealthyNourita, every coaching client gets the chance to explore their Circle of Life right at the beginning of their journey. It offers a fresh, honest starting point to reflect on what areas need more nourishment. Then, toward the end of the program, we revisit this exercise as a reflection tool—to track progress, celebrate milestones, and acknowledge the transformation that has unfolded throughout the holistic health journey.

Each area of primary food impacts your health—whether it’s mental, physical, or emotional. If even one of those areas is out of balance, it can create a ripple effect across the rest of your life. In other words, when you address an imbalanced area, you often trigger a powerful domino effect of positive change in other areas too.
According to IIN, there’s an important truth to remember: “How you do one thing is how you do everything.” This means that if you know how to care for your physical health, chances are you’ll also be more mindful in your relationships, your career, and other aspects of life.
At HealthyNourita, we guide our clients in adopting empowering strategies to restore balance and fulfilment across all primary food areas—nurturing their wellbeing from the inside out. Because in the end, the person who can live mindfully and holistically… is already within you.
Secondary Food
When you hear the term “secondary food,” it might sound like it’s less important or something that comes second when it comes to your wellbeing. But let’s be clear—this isn’t a new food group or a trendy diet. Secondary food simply refers to the actual, physical food on your plate.
Over the years, the concept of secondary food has evolved. In fact, it stems from the food pyramid many of us grew up learning about. According to the global dietary guidelines shared by IIN, “the original U.S. food pyramid came out in 1992, but another pyramid, incorporating exercise, debuted in 2005. Shortly after, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) introduced MyPlate.” This is what we now refer to as the secondary food plate.
What makes the HealthyNourita Coaching Program unique is that we don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to food. We don’t prescribe a fixed dietary plan. Instead, we honour each client’s unique health journey, address their pain points, and allow space for self-discovery to lead the way. From there, we gently guide clients toward a clean eating approach—rooted in mindfulness, balance, and personalization.

Furthermore, IIN—the institute I graduated from as a health coach—designed its own unique tool that brings together both primary and secondary food into one visual guide: the Integrative Nutrition Plate. This plate is not a rigid set of rules, but rather a flexible lifestyle support tool that can be adapted to each person’s needs.

The Integrative Nutrition Plate highlights the four core areas of primary food—relationships, physical activity, career, and spirituality—alongside the updated USDA MyPlate (as mentioned earlier), with a few mindful adjustments.
During the HealthyNourita Coaching Program, clients revisit the Integrative Nutrition Plate often. It becomes a powerful clarity tool that helps track transformation, align food choices, and stay grounded in personal health goals. What makes this plate truly special is that it’s not only well-rounded—it’s also completely bio-individual.

In summary, Holistic Health is about infusing your life with presence—even at the dining table. It’s a mindset, a lifestyle approach that sees the person as a whole: mind, body, and soul.
At the heart of Integrative Nutrition are three powerful core principles: bio-individuality, primary food, and secondary food.
- Bio-individuality means that everyone’s nutritional needs are different—what works for one person may not work for another.
- Primary food refers to everything that nourishes you off the plate—your relationships, movement, purpose, and more.
- Secondary food is the actual food you eat—what’s on your plate.
Bringing these principles together, the Integrative Nutrition Plate beautifully combines the four essential areas of primary food with the elements of secondary food in one balanced, personalized visual. It’s a reminder that wellness isn’t one-size-fits-all—it’s uniquely yours.
At HealthyNourita, each client gets the opportunity to express her health concerns and build a personalized plan to achieve her wellness goals and holistic vision. Through a bio-individual approach, HealthyNourita supports women on two main paths: emotional eating and hormonal harmony—tailored to meet each woman’s unique needs.
As part of the HealthyNourita Coaching Program, the client regularly engages in the Primary Food Exercise throughout the course as a reflective tool to track progress, celebrate wins, and stay aligned with her wellness journey. In addition, Secondary Food within the program is approached with flexibility and care—considering each client’s dietary needs and health challenges to support a truly balanced, sustainable way of eating.
