Afra Al Salami stands as a distinguished Emirati engineer whose career bridges the rigor of science with the art of expression. At the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), she works on the development, maintenance, and strategic advancement of high-voltage transmission systems. Yet her contribution extends beyond engineering: she is an active force in institutional innovation, facilitating campaigns, fostering ideas, and shaping them into tangible improvements that reflect a culture of progress.

Parallel to her engineering career, Afra founded Values Fragrance, a brand rooted in the emotional fabric of Emirati identity. Inspired by values such as integrity, loyalty, and sincerity, her creations seek to capture the spirit of her nation in scent. For Afra, both engineering and perfumery share the same essence: building with intention, structure, and care.

Her professional journey began with curiosity an eagerness to understand how systems function, how structures endure, and how ideas materialize. That curiosity led her to engineering, and ultimately to DEWA, where she discovered that infrastructure is not only technical but also deeply human, shaping the nation’s growth. In time, she expanded her scope, leading innovation sessions, connecting management and engineers, and championing creativity as a tool for problem-solving.

The challenges she faced were not insignificant. Entering a male-dominated field required resilience and credibility. Often the only woman in the room, Afra learned to navigate expectations while asserting her expertise. Beyond engineering, managing her entrepreneurial venture alongside her full-time career demanded discipline and adaptability, reinforcing her capacity to thrive under pressure.

Among her proudest achievements are her contributions to industry knowledge. She co-authored two technical papers: “Rectification of Sheath Faults Observed in Power Cables and Accessories in EHV Cable Circuits” and “Composite Insulators Failure Identification in Service: A Utility Experience.” These works not only advanced technical discourse but also underscored her role as a voice of authority within the electrical engineering community.

Her efforts also extend to mentorship and training, where she contributed to standardized practices that support the development of young engineers. Publicly, she has represented Emirati women on panels such as “The Catalyst of Success” and “Youth in a Successful World”, offering a perspective that combines technical authority with cultural responsibility.

Beyond the technical and entrepreneurial realms, Afra believes real achievement lies in the positive change one creates: in the systems improved, the people uplifted, and the purpose sustained. She draws deep inspiration from Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, the “Mother of the Nation,” whose vision and advocacy transformed opportunities for Emirati women from education to leadership. إلى جانب مسيرتها المهنية، أسست عفراء علامة قيم للعطور، وهي مشروع يعكس البعد العاطفي للهوية الإماراتية، مستلهمًا من القيم الجوهرية مثل النزاهة، والإخلاص، والولاء، والصدق. بالنسبة لها، لا يختلف تصميم العطور عن الهندسة: كلاهما فن في البناء، يتطلب نية واضحة، وهيكلًا متينًا، وحرصًا على التفاصيل

رحلتها المهنية بدأت بدافع الفضول لفهم الأنظمة والهياكل، وهو ما قادها إلى دراسة الهندسة ثم الانضمام إلى هيئة كهرباء ومياه دبي. هناك اكتشفت أن الابتكار في البنية التحتية لا يقل أهمية عن التقنية ذاتها، فساهمت في مبادرات تهدف إلى إعادة التفكير في التحديات القائمة وإيجاد حلول عملية. ومن خلال هذا التوازن بين التقنية والإبداع، استطاعت أن تبني مسارًا يعكس هويتها المزدوجة: المهندسة المتمرسة ورائدة الأعمال ذات الرؤية

واجهت عفراء تحديات كونها امرأة إماراتية في مجال هندسي يهيمن عليه الرجال، إذ كان عليها أن تثبت جدارتها في الاجتماعات والمشروعات الميدانية. غير أن هذه التجربة جعلتها أكثر إصرارًا على تمثيل المرأة الإماراتية بجدارة، وعلى إثبات أن الكفاءة هي المعيار الأوحد للنجاح. كما أن خوضها مجال ريادة الأعمال في الوقت ذاته أضاف تحديًا جديدًا، لكنه عمّق من قدرتها على إدارة التوازن بين الالتزامات المهنية والشخصية

إنجازاتها تتنوع بين نشر أبحاث علمية متخصصة، منها: «معالجة أعطال الغلاف في كابلات الضغط الفائق» و «التعرف على فشل العوازل المركبة أثناء الخدمة: تجربة ميدانية». هذه الدراسات مثّلت إضافة نوعية للمعرفة في قطاع الطاقة، وأسهمت في إثراء الحوار الهندسي على مستوى دولي. إلى جانب ذلك، ساهمت في تطوير برامج تدريبية معيارية للمهندسين الجدد، وأسهمت في تهيئة بيئة داعمة للتعلم والنمو

شاركت كذلك في حوارات عامة مثل «محفز النجاح» و «الشباب في عالم ناجح»، لتكون صوتًا يعبر عن تجربة المرأة الإماراتية في مجالات الهندسة والابتكار. أما على المستوى الإبداعي، فقد استطاعت من خلال علامتها العطرية أن تمزج بين التراث والحداثة، لتجسد العطر كوسيلة لنقل القيم والذاكرة والانتماء

ترى عفراء أن المرأة الإماراتية اليوم لم تعد فقط مشاركة في مسيرة الوطن، بل قائدة لها، تصوغ السياسات، وتبتكر الحلول، وتفتح الأفق أمام الأجيال المقبلة. وهي ترى في سمو الشيخة فاطمة بنت مبارك “أم الإمارات” رمزًا ومرجعًا، حيث مثّل دعمها المستمر حجر الأساس في فتح أبواب التعليم والقيادة أمام النساء، ومنحهن الثقة لبناء مستقبل متجدد
