Asma Obaid Lootah.. An Emirati Artist from Dubai Who Translates Ideas and Emotions into Art
A Journey Shaped by Expression and the Discovery of Humanity
I am Asma Obaid Lootah, an Emirati artist from Dubai, and for me, art is a space for expression and discovery, and a way through which I translate ideas and emotions into visual form. My artistic practice has evolved over the years, and I have participated in exhibitions both across the UAE and internationally, with artistic engagements in Jordan, Spain, the Netherlands, Georgia, and London. Alongside my interest in art, I have a background and deep interest in psychology and human consciousness, which has added another dimension to the way I view art. I have become interested not only in what we see in an artwork, but also in what we feel when we stand before it and what it awakens within us.
Art is a Language of Freedom, Experimentation, and Expression
Art has always been a language of expression for me, offering a wide space for freedom, experimentation, and the ability to move beyond a single form or style. I have always been naturally curious about people—their emotions, thoughts, and the way they see the world—and this curiosity connects naturally with my relationship with art. There is also an important personal motivation behind my journey: I am a mother. It matters to me that my daughter grows up seeing that a woman can be a present and loving mother while also having her own passion, ambition, achievements, and identity. I do not want simply to tell her that a woman can achieve; I want her to see it in front of her.
International Exhibitions Have Been Important Milestones in My Artistic Journey
I consider having my work presented in exhibitions outside the UAE one of the important milestones in my journey, because every international participation has given me the opportunity to present my experience as an Emirati artist within a different environment and culture. Among the experiences I particularly value was the “Love and Peace” exhibition in Jordan, which brought together artists from 14 countries. It was a beautiful experience that brought different cultures together around a shared humanitarian message. I also value my participation in a charity art auction in London in support of the Rashid Centre for People of Determination, because it connected art with a humanitarian purpose, alongside my artistic participation in Spain, the Netherlands, and Georgia, as well as exhibitions across the UAE.
Preserving My Own Voice and Identity Has Been One of the Greatest Challenges
One of the most important challenges I have faced throughout my journey is maintaining an artist’s own voice and identity amid the many artistic directions and experiences around us. I have learned not to allow comparison to guide me and instead to let my artistic practice evolve naturally. An artist changes with age, experiences, and knowledge, and therefore it is natural for their art to evolve as well. I believe that consistency and experimentation are more important than striving for perfection, because sometimes the creative process leads us to something more beautiful than what we originally planned.
The Emirati Woman Has Moved Beyond the Need to Prove Her Capabilities
I believe that Emirati women today have moved beyond the stage of proving what they are capable of; they have already demonstrated their presence across art, culture, science, the economy, entrepreneurship, and decision-making. What distinguishes the Emirati experience is that women have grown within an environment that believed in their capabilities and provided opportunities for education, work, and participation. Our responsibility today is to make the most of these opportunities and transform them into achievement and meaningful impact. As an Emirati artist, I am proud to see the presence of Emirati women artists expanding both locally and internationally, with each artist carrying her own identity and unique vision to the world.
In London, I Discovered How Art Can Create an Impact Beyond Beauty
One of the experiences that has remained with me is my participation in the charity art auction in London in support of the Rashid Centre for People of Determination. It was a different kind of experience because it showed me how art can go beyond exhibition and beauty and become a means of contributing to a humanitarian cause. I loved the idea that an artwork that began as a personal idea within an artist could eventually create an impact that extends far beyond the artist themselves. For me, this is one of the most beautiful dimensions of art: when creativity becomes a genuine human contribution.

Family, Curiosity, and Travel Have Expanded the Way I See the World
My family and the environment in which I grew up have had an important influence on my journey, as have curiosity and a love of learning, which are among the strongest forces that have shaped my personality and path. My interests have never been limited to art; they have also extended to human consciousness and different areas of knowledge. Travel and exposure to different cultures, artists, and experiences have also broadened my perspective. The more experiences an artist has, the wider the way they see the world becomes, allowing them to understand humanity more deeply and express ideas and emotions through their work.
My Message to Young Women: Do Not Become a Copy of Someone Else
My message to girls and young women is not to try to become a copy of someone else’s successful journey. Learn from the experiences of others, but search for the path that reflects who you are. We are fortunate to have the opportunities that the UAE has created for us, and the most beautiful way to appreciate those opportunities is to invest them in building something real—something that carries our own imprint and adds value to our community. Every woman has her own journey, her own voice, and her own way of creating an impact.
My Ambition Is to Continue Developing My Artistic Practice and Reach Greater International Platforms
I aspire to continue developing my artistic practice and to see my work gain a stronger presence in international exhibitions and art platforms. I am also interested in exploring the relationship between art and the human experience more deeply, while continuing to develop my artistic language and experiment with new spaces, approaches, and techniques. At the same time, I like to leave part of the future open to surprise, because discovery itself is an essential part of art for me.

Art Does Not Always Have to Provide an Answer
I believe art is not always required to provide an answer. Sometimes it is enough for an artwork to make someone pause, feel something, or see an idea from a different perspective. Every person looks at an artwork through their own experiences, memories, and emotions; the artist creates the work, but the meaning that emerges for each person standing before it can be completely different. For me, this is one of the most beautiful aspects of art: an artwork can begin with a personal experience and then become a unique experience for everyone who encounters it.
“We Will Show the Strongest and the Best” Means Continuing to Evolve
For me, the message “We Will Show the Strongest and the Best” represents the idea of continuous growth. Strength does not mean that we never face challenges; rather, it means learning from them and emerging with greater awareness and experience. Professionally, it means not simply being present, but ensuring that our presence has value and creates an impact. Within the family, it means passing confidence and ambition on to future generations while preserving our values and identity. On a national level, this meaning reflects the UAE itself—a nation proud of what it has achieved, yet always looking toward the future. Emirati women are part of this spirit: moving forward without ever needing to abandon their roots or identity.
True Strength Is Knowing Yourself and Continuing Despite Challenges
My message to every woman who aspires to be among the “strongest and best” in her country, community, and family is that strength does not mean never feeling tired or afraid. It means knowing yourself, learning from your experiences, and having the courage to continue and to change when change is needed. Being “the best” does not mean being better than someone else; the most important comparison is with yourself—to ensure that every stage of your life makes you more knowledgeable, aware, and experienced than the one before it.
“Mother of the Nation” Has Established a Vision of Empowerment That Extends Beyond Women
When we look at what Emirati women have achieved today, we see the result of a long journey of support, trust, and investment in their capabilities. The journey of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, “Mother of the Nation,” has established an important understanding: empowering women does not benefit women alone; its impact extends to the family, society, and future generations. To Her Highness, I would like to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation for decades of supporting Emirati women and believing in their ability to learn, create, lead, and participate in building their nation. What we see today in the presence and achievements of Emirati women is an extension of that vision.
Pride in the Nation and Responsibility for the Future
I feel proud and grateful to belong to a country that believed in women, invested in their education and capabilities, and gave them genuine space to work, create, and participate. Emirati Women’s Day is not only a celebration of how far women have come; it is also a reminder of our responsibility for what we will contribute in the next chapter. I hope Emirati women will continue to carry their identity and ambition into greater spaces, both within the UAE and beyond, and that their success will remain an extension of their values, roots, and vision for the future.
