Mental health is a global crisis, and recent statistics paint a troubling picture. Shockingly, 60% of individuals suffering from mental health conditions worldwide do not receive treatment. A study conducted in Qatar found that 20% of individuals aged 18–65 visiting primary health care centers had at least one psychiatric diagnosis. Yet, when it comes to mental health data specific to South Asians in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), there remains a significant gap in available statistics. However, the limited data we do have raises serious concerns.

In South Asian countries, the prevalence of common mental disorders (CMDs) is alarmingly high: 26.4% of participants in studies reported depressive symptoms, 25.8% struggled with anxiety, and 17.2% experienced post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Despite these staggering figures, stigma, cost, lack of access, and misinformation continue to be the primary barriers preventing individuals from seeking professional care.

That’s where Sama Health comes in—a groundbreaking online platform designed to provide culturally relevant therapy for South Asians in the UAE. Sama Health tackles multiple challenges within the mental health care system with one seamless digital solution available on both iPhone and Android.

A New Approach to Therapy Access

“Sama Health functions like an online marketplace for therapy, where the platform does not directly employ therapists but rather connects individuals with professionals who offer their services,” explains Misha Akbar, founder of Sama Health. A mental health advocate and neuroscience and psychology master’s student at King’s College London, Misha is on a mission to break down the barriers preventing South Asians from seeking the support they need.

Her initiative is timely. A 2020 study found that 57% of people in the UAE experienced at least one mental health disorder. The two most common conditions were anxiety (56.4%) and depression (31.5%). Misha’s personal struggles navigating mental health care and societal stigma inspired her to create Sama Health, making culturally sensitive therapy more accessible for South Asians in the UAE.

Affordability, Accessibility, and Cultural Sensitivity

Unlike traditional therapy models, Sama Health ensures accessibility by removing logistical and financial hurdles. The platform does not charge therapists to join, allowing them to focus solely on patient care. Licensed clinical and counseling psychologists, approved by the Community Development Authority (CDA) and the Dubai Health Authority (DHA), are carefully vetted before being listed on the platform.

One of the standout features of Sama Health is its complimentary introductory sessions. Users can receive up to 20 minutes of free consultation with up to three different therapists before committing to a paid session. “By offering free initial sessions, we encourage individuals to explore therapy without an immediate financial or emotional burden. These sessions help dispel the misconception that therapy is merely ‘talk,’” Misha emphasizes.

Additionally, Sama Health’s mobile app makes therapy more accessible than in-person alternatives, ensuring that those who need support can easily connect with the right professionals from the comfort of their homes.

Expanding Impact and Future Growth

Sama Health is already making waves in the mental health landscape. In 2023, the platform was a finalist at the UAE Mental Health Awards, recognizing its innovation and impact. With 25 licensed therapists and growing, Sama Health is actively expanding its reach. The platform recently formed a strategic partnership with Hygge.io, strengthening its presence in the wellness industry.

Looking ahead, Sama Health is gearing up for more impactful initiatives. A pilot program in collaboration with regional universities will soon provide mental health support tailored for South Asian students, a demographic often underserved in the region. Additionally, Sama Health has built a thriving WhatsApp community of therapists, fostering a network of professionals committed to improving mental well-being.

Shaping the Future of Mental Health Care

Sama Health is more than just an app—it’s a movement. By breaking down stigma, making therapy more accessible, and ensuring cultural relevance, it is transforming how South Asians in the UAE approach mental health care. As conversations around mental wellness gain momentum, platforms like Sama Health will continue to play a crucial role in reshaping the landscape, ensuring that no one has to struggle in silence.
