Dr. Noura Nasir ALkarbi… From Knowledge to Impact and Shaping the Future… An Emirati Academic Who Began with People and Society and Went on to Scientific Research and Women’s Empowerment

I am Dr. Noura Al Karbi, an academic and Director of the Office of Women in Scientific Research at the University of Sharjah. Today, I work in the fields of scientific research, women’s empowerment, research communication, and building partnerships between the university and the community. But before all these titles and positions, I am the daughter of an Emirati environment that believed from the beginning that education is the path to building people, and that ambition should have no limits. My journey began with a passion for people and society and an interest in understanding the transformations they experience. I studied for a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology at the University of Sharjah, and the university was the true starting point of my academic and professional journey. During this stage, training and working with the Sharjah Council for Family and Community Affairs was a very important milestone in shaping my professional character, as it brought me closer to issues concerning society, women, and children, and taught me that meaningful research begins in the field and with listening to people and understanding their needs. I then continued my academic journey in sociology and received a scholarship from the Scholarships Office at the Presidential Court to pursue my doctorate in Spain. I was among the first Emirati women to receive a scholarship to pursue a doctorate in the Spanish language, earning a PhD in Sociology from the Complutense University of Madrid and a second doctorate in Women’s Studies from the University of Granada. Today, as I work at the University of Sharjah as an academic and Director of the Office of Women in Scientific Research, I feel that every stage I went through prepared the way for the next—from family, to university, to fieldwork, to scholarships, and then to scientific research and women’s empowerment. I believe that the most beautiful part of the journey is not only what I have achieved, but what I can contribute to building, and the paths I can help open for researchers, Emirati women, and future generations. I believe that the greatest success a person can achieve is to transform their personal success into an opportunity for others to succeed.

Sociology… A Passion That Began at School

My relationship with sociology began at school, when I used to read a sociology book even though I had not yet decided on my major. I found myself immersed in its pages because it spoke about people, society, and the issues that I had always found myself questioning. From that moment, I realized that I did not simply want to learn; I wanted to understand society from within and get closer to people and the issues that affect them. That is why I chose sociology and later moved toward field research and issues concerning women, children, families, and retirees, because I believe that the value of knowledge increases when it enables us to understand society’s needs and contribute to developing solutions. I always say: a student may be holding a book in their hands today, but in reality, they may be holding their future; a single page could be the beginning of an unforgettable story.

Studying in Spain… A Chapter That Reshaped My Character

If I were to choose one pivotal chapter, I would choose my scholarship journey to Spain, because it was not simply a journey to earn a doctorate; it was an experience that reshaped me intellectually, academically, and personally. Being the first Emirati female researcher to be officially sponsored by the Scholarships Office at the Presidential Court to pursue a doctorate in sociology and women’s studies in the Spanish language was a responsibility before it was an achievement. It taught me that when an opportunity is given to a person, it becomes a responsibility toward themselves and their nation, leading ultimately to my current responsibility at the Office of Women in Scientific Research at the University of Sharjah and my role in supporting researchers and empowering women in scientific research. I am also proud of the national honors and awards I have received, but I believe that true achievement is for these milestones to transform into lasting impact, and for the work I do to have value that extends beyond personal achievement. It is difficult to reduce the journey to a single accomplishment because every stage prepared the way for the next, but receiving a scholarship to Spain to pursue a doctorate in Spanish was certainly a major turning point. I left the environment I knew and entered a new society, learned a new language, experienced a different academic system, and had to rebuild myself from the ground up. Among the milestones I am also proud of is receiving the Best Scientific Research Award at the university level for my undergraduate graduation project, followed by the Young Emirati Researchers Award for my master’s thesis, and later, during my doctoral studies, receiving the Outstanding Scholarship Student Award in the category of Honorable National Representation of the UAE. I am also very proud of my field study on Emirati retirees, whose recommendations evolved from an academic research project into a social impact through the establishment of the Emirates Retirees Association, as well as the work I currently undertake in empowering women in scientific research. I believe that true achievement is not measured by the number of awards, but by what transforms from a personal accomplishment into an impact that benefits others.

Challenges… Part of the Journey, Not a Reason to Step Back

I believe that every genuine journey comes with challenges, and perhaps one of the greatest challenges was balancing academic ambition with professional and personal responsibilities while continuing to develop myself in new environments and different cultures. Studying abroad itself was an experience filled with challenges: studying in a different language and culture, relying on myself, living away from home, and then returning and rebuilding my academic path. These experiences taught me that a challenge does not mean that the path is wrong; rather, it may be part of the path itself. I began to view challenges as opportunities to rethink, learn, and grow, rather than reasons to step back. These experiences taught me that the real challenge is not always found in the circumstances we face, but in our ability to continue despite them.

Emirati Women… From Proving Their Capabilities to Expanding Their Impact

Emirati women today have moved from a stage of proving their capabilities to a stage of expanding their impact. They are present across different sectors, including leadership, education, scientific research, the economy, diplomacy, space, entrepreneurship, community work, and many others. However, I believe that the next stage is not only about increasing women’s participation, but also about increasing their influence in knowledge production, policymaking, decision-making, and shaping the future of the sectors in which they work. As for Arab women, I believe they now have broad opportunities to move from participation to influence, particularly in education, scientific research, innovation, and policymaking. In my view, the next stage is not simply about increasing the number of women, but about increasing their influence in shaping knowledge, decisions, and the future.

“The University of Sharjah Is Waiting for You, Noura”… Words That Stayed with Me

There are many moments that have had an impact on me, but one of the most memorable was my meeting with His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi while I was studying in Spain. When I introduced myself and told him that I was from Sharjah and had received a scholarship from the Presidential Court to pursue my doctorate, he said to me: “The University of Sharjah is waiting for you, Noura.” Those words have stayed with me to this day because they made me feel that every journey of knowledge, no matter how far it takes us, should ultimately return to our homeland.

Family, Nation, and Leadership… The Foundation Behind the Journey

After the grace of God, my family, my nation, and the leadership were among the most important sources of support throughout my journey. I owe much to everyone who believed in me, gave me an opportunity, offered a word of encouragement, or gave me the space to explore and experience. I also believe that the national environment in which I was raised was a fundamental factor, because the UAE provided women with opportunities in education, scholarships, employment, and leadership, allowing them to dream and then work toward achieving those dreams. Therefore, I do not see my success as an individual story, but rather as the result of a system of support, opportunities, responsibility, and hard work.

To Every Emirati Girl… Never Put a Ceiling on Your Ambition

I say to every Emirati girl and young woman: never put a ceiling on your ambition, but give your ambition a foundation built on education, knowledge, and hard work. Do not wait until you are perfect before you begin, and do not be afraid of experience or mistakes. Most importantly, when you reach a position where you are able to make a difference, do not settle for succeeding only for yourself. Open the way for others, because the most beautiful form of success is when your personal success becomes an opportunity for another woman.

Scientific Research and Women’s Empowerment… An Ambition to Create Lasting Impact

My primary ambition is to continue working in a field that brings together scientific research and social impact. I aspire to develop initiatives that support male and female researchers, expand research partnerships, and connect the university with the community and policymakers. Through my role at the Office of Women in Scientific Research, I also aspire to move women beyond simply being present in academic institutions toward having a more influential role in knowledge production, scientific publishing, innovation, and shaping the future. On a broader level, I hope to leave an impact that continues after me, because true achievement, in my view, is not only what we accomplish for ourselves, but what we leave behind for others and for our nation.

On Emirati Women’s Day… Thank You for Every Opportunity, Trust, and Support

My message is that we must continue to believe in Emirati women as essential partners in the future of the nation. I say to everyone who has contributed to the journey of Emirati women: thank you for every opportunity that was opened, every trust that was placed, and every woman who was supported until she reached the place she deserved. I believe that what Emirati women have achieved today is as much a responsibility as it is an accomplishment, because the opportunities we have received must be transformed into knowledge, contribution, and lasting impact for future generations.

“We Will Emerge Stronger and Better”: From Empowerment to Impact

“We Will Emerge Stronger and Better” is a message that reflects the journey of Emirati women, who have moved from empowerment to active participation and impact-making. I believe that every day is a day for Emirati women; a woman’s achievements cannot be confined to a single day, but are measured by what she contributes through knowledge, work, giving, and impact throughout the year. Therefore, extending the celebration of Emirati Women from one day to an entire month carries a deeper significance. It is not simply an extension of the celebration in terms of time, but a message that women’s empowerment is an ongoing national project, providing broader space for appreciation, action, launching initiatives, and highlighting inspiring role models. From an academic perspective, the evolution of Emirati women’s journey reflects a transition from empowerment to enabling women to fully realize their capabilities, from participation to influence, and from benefiting from opportunities to creating opportunities, knowledge, and impact. I see this extension reflected in my own personal and professional journey; from education and scholarships to academic work and scientific research, and ultimately to my role in supporting researchers, empowering women in scientific research, and building bridges of collaboration between the university and the community. Therefore, “We Will Emerge Stronger and Better” means to me an invitation to continue building on what has been achieved and to transform the opportunities provided to Emirati women into knowledge, achievement, and sustainable impact that serves the nation and society. The celebration of Emirati women may extend from August 28 to September 28, but their journey, contribution, and impact continue throughout the year.

A Message to Every Emirati Woman Aspiring to Be Among the “Strongest and Best”

My message to every Emirati woman is to first look at what Emirati women have achieved, and then believe that what lies ahead can be even greater. Today, we have a national experience in which women have become genuine partners in development and decision-making. The UAE ranked first in the Arab world in the 2025 Global Gender Gap Report and ranked first globally in indicators including higher education enrollment and women’s representation in parliament, where women account for 50% of representation. Therefore, “We Will Emerge Stronger and Better” does not mean, to me, that we need to prove that we have arrived; rather, it means asking: How can we move from achievement to greater achievement? From participation to influence? And from receiving opportunities to creating opportunities for others? I say to every Emirati woman: invest in your education and knowledge, trust your abilities, and never put a ceiling on your ambitions. Preserve your identity, values, and family, while at the same time pursuing your professional and academic ambitions as far as they can take you. Emirati women have already proven that they are capable, and the next stage is not about proving their ability, but about expanding their impact. One of the most beautiful things a successful woman can do after reaching a position of success is to open the way for another woman who comes after her.

The Impact of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak “Mother of the Emirates” on My Vision of Emirati Women

The journey of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, “Mother of the Emirates,” has had a profound impact on my vision of Emirati women, not only through what women have achieved today, but also through the role that began during the early stages of the establishment of the United Arab Emirates. During the formation of the Union, Her Highness stood alongside the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may he rest in peace, in the project of building the nation and its people, and from the very beginning believed that the advancement of the nation could not be complete without women being essential partners in that journey. From this belief came her pioneering initiative to establish the General Women’s Union in 1975, marking a historic turning point in the journey of Emirati women. It became a platform that brought together women’s efforts, empowered them to participate in the nation’s development, and strengthened their presence in education, employment, and society. Over the decades, this vision evolved into an integrated national system that supported women at different stages of their lives and opened wide opportunities for them in leadership, education, scientific research, the economy, diplomacy, humanitarian work, and many other fields. For me, as an Emirati woman, academic, and researcher, I see my journey as part of this continuation; the opportunities I have been given in education, scholarships, research, and academic work, followed by my role in empowering women and researchers, are an extension of a national environment that believed that investing in women is an investment in the future of the UAE. My message to Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak is one of gratitude and pride: thank you, Your Highness, for this vision that began with the early days of the Union, and for believing in Emirati women and their ability to be partners in building the nation and shaping its future. Today, as we celebrate Emirati women over an entire month under the theme “We Will Emerge Stronger and Better,” I believe the most meaningful way we can honor this journey is to continue building upon what was established, transform the opportunities we have been given into knowledge, achievement, and impact, and open the way for future generations of Emirati women.
