In an era where leadership is often measured by speed and scale, the 3rd Annual Women in Business Conference delivered a bold reminder: true leadership is also deeply human.

Held under the resonant theme “Practicing Courageous & Empathetic Leadership,” the full-day event was hosted at Heriot-Watt University Dubai in collaboration with Bella & Bella Productions—the visionary platform founded by Gina, a dynamic advocate for female empowerment and authentic storytelling.

With over 100+ attendees representing 25+ nationalities, the event brought together female founders, investors, decision-makers, and students for a powerful day of connection, insight, and transformation.

Opening with Purpose

The conference commenced with heartfelt opening remarks by Professor Dame Heather McGregor, Provost and Vice Principal of Heriot-Watt Dubai, whose personal reflections set the tone for the day.

“Empathy and courage are not opposites,” she noted, “they are complementary forces that redefine what it means to lead.”

Gina, the founder of Bella & Bella Productions, followed with a compelling welcome, emphasizing the need for platforms where women can lead unapologetically and build bridges across industries.

“We don’t just build events, we build communities,” she declared.

Cracking the Code of Luck and Leading from Within

The opening keynote speech delivered by  Juliet Chioma Nweke, a Heriot-Watt University graduate was among the most energizing sessions, setting a powerful tone for the rest of the conference. Her session, titled “The Luck Formula-The Secret to Standing Out as a Graduate,” blended personal story, psychological insight, and strategic life advice in a way that left attendees both empowered and equipped.

Juliet began by addressing a common misconception: that luck and chance are interchangeable. Drawing from the words of Brian Tracy (2010), she dismantled that myth with clarity and intention:

“The lucky individual has done many little things that, in combination, have dramatically increased the likelihood that his or her desired goal is achieved.”

In essence, she reframed luck as preparation meeting opportunity, urging graduates not to wait passively for success, but to engineer it through consistent, meaningful action.

She also explored the reality of the Dubai job market, encouraging attendees to maintain a sharp awareness of its demands while building resilience and professional presence. One of her standout analogies compared our social circles to our diet:

“Your diet isn’t just what you eat, it’s who you surround yourself with.”

Juliet also delved into the psychology of risk and performance, using the Yerkes-Dodson Law to explain how moderate stress levels can actually enhance productivity and performance when managed wisely.

To close her session, Juliet invited the audience into a powerful reflective exercise titled “Get Rid of Imposter Syndrome.” Framed around key moments in professional life before and after job interviews, public speaking, or career milestones, the exercise prompted attendees to confront self-doubt, acknowledge their worth, and reframe their internal narratives.

It wasn’t just a talk. It was a transformation.

From Business Values to Bold Vision

Houda Abdurrahman, Founder of thowby –Your Original Abaya, led one of the most insightful and inspiring sessions of the day. Speaking on how she built a sustainable work ecosystem, Houda emphasized that her company’s values, mission, and vision are not just written—they are lived by everyone involved, from employees to suppliers.

“The secret is being fully present, in every sense of the word,” she said.

She candidly shared her journey from questioning herself eight years ago, “How can I lead my business to success?”, to now owning a successful boutique and an established brand. Houda credited her success to starting with the right business strategy and model, reminding attendees that thoughtful foundations pave the way for long-term impact.

Houda also spotlighted the three core values that define her brand:

            •           Integrity – remaining true to her brand’s ethos and purpose

            •           Trust with Confidence – cultivating strong, lasting relationships

            •           Care with Personal Touch – making every customer feel genuinely seen and valued

Her story offered a testament to values-driven leadership, determination, and building with both heart and strategy.

From Lived Experience to Leading Thought

Another standout session came from Modupe Omonze, Founder of Runway Dubai, who took attendees on a powerful personal journey. Speaking candidly about her battle with breast cancer, she reminded everyone that courageous leadership often begins with resilience.

“Don’t give up, no matter what happens,” she said with quiet strength.

She also reflected on the link between identity and professional presence, spotlighting the UAE’s instrumental role in empowering women to lead with authenticity and purpose.

Storytelling as Soul Work

In one of the day’s most emotionally charged sessions, Dr. Ashmiza Mahamed Ismail, Associate Professor of Management at British University in Dubai, delivered “Leading with Soul:How Great Storytellers Become Effective Leaders,” a session about the power of storytelling in leadership. She shared the story of the founder of Dubai Chocolate, a brand born from passion and eventually recognized by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

Her message was clear: “Your story is not a side note. It’s a strategic asset.” As participants opened up, the session became a space for collective healing, inspiration, and deep human connection.

Dialogue That Dismantles Barriers

Breakout sessions continued the theme of courageous and empathetic leadership. A research-led discussion by Dr. Tracie Scott, Assistant Professor of Law at Heriot-Watt University Dubai and student leader Caroline Santi examined Women in Leadership and the Problem of Perception, diving into the cultural filters that challenge female authority.

In another high-impact dialogue titled Thriving in Challenging Times, Dr. Frank Tuitt, a professor and U.S.-based inclusion strategist, and President Andy McGadney of Knox College (U.S) explored how empathy, equity, and resilience are essential pillars of global leadership.
