At the age of nine, an Emirati girl stood confidently before the cameras of Abu Dhabi Television, presenting children’s programs with a confidence far beyond her years. She often spoke of a dream that seemed distant at the time: to become the “Oprah Winfrey of the Arab world.” Little did she know that life would take her from television studios to the lecture halls of medical schools in Ireland, then to the classrooms of Johns Hopkins University in the United States, and eventually to positions shaping healthcare policy in Abu Dhabi. Decades later, she would return to the microphone—not to host children’s programs, but to address an entire community with the knowledge of a physician and the heart of a media professional.
She is Dr. Omniat Mohammed Al Hajeri, Executive Director of the Community Health Sector at the Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre and one of the UAE’s most prominent female figures in the field of public health.

Beginnings: A Home Where Knowledge Was the Foundation
Dr. Omniat was born and raised in Abu Dhabi in a traditional Emirati family that made education its cornerstone and hard work a daily habit. Reflecting on those early years, she says:
“The person who shaped my early awareness was my father, may God preserve him. He raised us to be self-reliant and to place education at the center of our lives. He never accepted any negligence in our studies. My mother, may God have mercy on her, was always there supporting us through her constant prayers and encouragement.”
She maintained first place in her class for eleven consecutive years, from primary school through high school, graduating at the top of the scientific stream. In 1993, a defining moment transformed her understanding of academic excellence when the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may he rest in peace, ordered that she be honored among the nation’s top-performing students.
Recalling that day, she says:
“I felt that excellence was no longer just a personal achievement celebrated by my family. It became a national responsibility and a debt of gratitude to a country that honors and values its hardworking sons and daughters.”
Inspiration: When Passion Meets a Doctor’s Calling
When asked what inspired her to pursue medicine and later public health, Dr. Omniat explains that the motivation was never the prestige of the profession but its impact.
“I wanted to be in a position where I could ease people’s suffering and see the difference I made in another person’s life.”
However, her years of clinical practice in diabetes and endocrinology clinics revealed a deeper truth:
“I realized early on that medicine is not only about treating the patient sitting in front of me—it is also about protecting entire communities from disease. A physician in a clinic treats an individual, but a public health physician serves an entire population. A single decision can change the lives of millions.”
This realization inspired her transition into public health, driven by a firm belief that “an hour of prevention is worth years of treatment.”

Turning Points: From Dublin’s Honor Boards to Shaping Public Policy
Dr. Omniat spent twelve years in Ireland, beginning her academic journey at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI). She graduated at the top of her class and achieved an extraordinary record, earning more than twenty-five academic excellence medals and receiving awards that had remained unclaimed for years.
She also authored a surgical textbook for medical students that has continued to be printed and used at the college since 2000. Today, visitors to the institution can still find her name displayed on numerous honor boards.
Years later, Johns Hopkins University added a new dimension to her professional journey, where she earned both a Master’s degree and a Doctorate in Public Health.
She reflects:
“Johns Hopkins transformed my thinking from that of a physician to that of a builder, leader, and policymaker. It taught me how data can be used to shape decisions and drive meaningful change.”
One professional turning point she never forgets came in 2002, when she was a young physician at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City. She submitted a personal proposal recommending that medical professionals be interviewed and evaluated before being selected to work at the then newly developing Al Rahba Hospital.
A few days later, she received an unexpected phone call asking her to visit the authority’s headquarters—not to discuss the proposal, but to lead its implementation herself.
“That phone call taught me that initiative never goes unnoticed and that anyone who carries an idea must be prepared to carry it through to the end.”
From that moment, her journey in building healthcare systems from within began. She contributed to developing frameworks for healthcare professional licensing, higher medical education, and continuing professional development. Today, she leads numerous public health initiatives, including the comprehensive screening program “EFHAS”, which involves more than sixty healthcare facilities, as well as maternal and child health programs and child protection initiatives within the healthcare sector through the Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre, an organization she helped plan and establish.

Challenges: Living Abroad, Career Transitions, and Proving Herself Through Performance
The path was not paved with medals alone. Dr. Omniat speaks candidly about three major challenges she faced.
The first was spending twelve years abroad.
“At first, I struggled with the language and with an overwhelming homesickness for the UAE. But those years taught me to rely on God and then on myself.”
The second challenge was transitioning from clinical medicine to institutional and administrative work.
“I had to learn the language of management, the art of negotiation, and how to transform a medical idea into an executable policy.”
The third challenge was establishing herself as a young woman within a system that was still taking shape.
“I had to prove myself through performance, not words.”
When the COVID-19 pandemic swept across the world, she found herself at the center of the response system.
Reflecting on that experience, she says: “COVID taught us the importance of moving quickly during crises and bringing partners together around one table. Today, we manage community health through three pillars: accurate data, smart partnerships, and proactive response rather than reactive action.”
In the Legacy of “Mother of the Nation”: Elevating Emirati Women’s Sports
Alongside her public health responsibilities, Dr. Omniat has, since 2012, carried a role she considers both an honor and a responsibility. She was appointed as a member of the Board of Directors of the Fatima bint Mubarak Ladies Sports Academy, and later became its Vice Chairwoman. She views this responsibility as a natural extension of her healthcare mission rather than a separate role.
“Serving as Vice Chairwoman of the Academy’s Board is a tremendous honor and an even greater responsibility. Since its establishment in 2010, the Academy has been a turning point for women’s sports. We organize international championships, discover talent, and provide a safe environment where women can participate in sports.”
With the support of H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, ‘Mother of the Nation,’ and under the inspiring leadership of H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Hazza bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairwoman of the Academy, Dr. Omniat has contributed to strengthening the international presence of Emirati women’s sports. This has been achieved through world-class women’s sporting events hosted in Abu Dhabi, talent identification and development programs, and initiatives that connect sports with community health and early disease detection.
Dr. Omniat emphasizes: “Being part of an institution that bears the name of ‘Mother of the Nation’ is a badge of honor that I wear with pride and a responsibility I strive to fulfill by ensuring that every Emirati girl has a safe environment where she can practice sports and discover her talents.”

Emirati and Arab Women: From Empowerment to Partnership in Shaping the Future
Dr. Omniat believes that Emirati women have reached a stage that goes beyond the question of empowerment to the question of impact.
“Emirati women are no longer knocking on doors; they are designing those doors and opening them for others. Thanks to the vision of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may he rest in peace, the support of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, ‘Mother of the Nation,’ and the unwavering commitment of our wise leadership, women have become full partners in decision-making across all sectors—including, but not limited to, medicine, space exploration, diplomacy, economics, and many other fields.”

A Message to the Daughters of the Nation
On the occasion of Emirati Women’s Day, Dr. Omniat shares a message with young Emirati women and girls:
“My daughter, do not wait for perfect circumstances before you begin; begin, and the circumstances will shape themselves around you. Make knowledge your weapon, sincerity your compass, and your nation the heart of every ambition. Remember that excellence is not an event—it is a habit. Fair competition does not weaken you; it strengthens and matures you. And always remember that your home and your family come first. If one door closes, know that God is preparing something far greater than your dreams. I was once a little girl who dreamed of becoming a media presenter, and God granted me both medicine and media.”
Future Aspirations: Prevention First and an Arab Voice in Global Science
Dr. Omniat’s ambitions do not stop at what she has already achieved. Today, she continues to work on strengthening Abu Dhabi’s model in preventive medicine, early screening, and combating obesity and diabetes, while also expanding her international scientific contributions in the fields of community health and obesity.
She also carries a unique cultural and scientific aspiration: establishing an Arab model of Narrative Medicine that combines medicine, literature, and the Arabic language. This vision stems from her belief that:
“Stories can heal just as medicine can, and kind words are part of the prescription.”
Yet the project closest to her heart remains empowerment—empowering individuals to take charge of their health, empowering young professionals to become leaders, and empowering women to tell their own stories in their own voices.

The Initiative of H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, “Mother of the Nation”
“We Will Emerge Stronger and Better”
A National Platform for Action, Recognition, and Inspiration
In light of the initiative announced by Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, “Mother of the Nation,” Chairwoman of the General Women’s Union, President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation, adopting “We Will Emerge Stronger and Better” as the theme of Emirati Women’s Day 2026, and Her Highness’s directive to extend the celebrations from 28 August to 28 September 2026, transforming the occasion into a nationwide platform for action, recognition, launching initiatives, and showcasing inspiring role models, Dr. Omniat reflects on the meaning of the slogan:
“This slogan is not a passing celebratory phrase; it is the essence of a nation’s journey. On a personal level, it means that excellence is an ongoing responsibility, not a destination where we arrive and rest. The strongest woman is the one who rises after every challenge stronger than before. The best woman is the one who constantly competes with herself to become better each day, while helping others rise, grow, and excel. There is ample space to celebrate all successful women and men together.
At the family level, it means that a woman’s strength begins at home. A strong mother raises a strong generation, and a united family is the first factory of the strongest and the best.
Professionally, it means raising the standards in every role we undertake, measuring ourselves against global best practices—and then striving to surpass them.
Nationally, the slogan is a true reflection of our leadership’s vision, a leadership that has accepted nothing less than first place for the UAE. As its sons and daughters, we can accept nothing less.”

To Every Woman Who Aspires to Be Among the Strongest and the Best
Dr. Omniat’s message to every woman aspiring to be among “the strongest and the best” in her nation, community, and family is heartfelt and clear:
“True strength is not a loud voice or a prestigious title. It is deep knowledge, sincere intention, resilience in adversity, and compassion in moments of strength. Be among the strongest through your faith, your knowledge, and your balance. Be among the best through the positive impact you leave on those around you.
Do not compare your beginning to someone else’s middle. Do not allow a single setback to define your entire story. Start from where you are, no matter how small it may seem. A woman who excels in her work, nurtures her home with love, raises her children with kindness, and serves her community with sincerity is among the strongest and the best—even if she never makes the headlines.
And remember, you live in a nation that does not ask you to prove your worth. It opens doors for you and says: move forward.”
“Mother of the Nation”: A Legacy That Shaped a Generation
Speaking about the influence of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak on her vision of Emirati women, Dr. Omniat says:
“I am a daughter of the generation for whom Her Highness opened the path. When I joined my scholarship program, when I stood in leadership positions, and when I had the honor of serving an academy that carries her distinguished name, I was harvesting the fruits of seeds she planted decades ago. She believed that women are half of society and that no nation can rise while operating at only half of its potential.
Her Highness taught us that empowerment is not a slogan—it is a system built on education, care, legislation, and trust. From her example, I learned that a true leader is one who creates leaders who may one day become equal to—or even better than—herself, so that the journey of progress continues.”

A Final Word: Gratitude to Those Who Planted the First Seeds
In closing, Dr. Omniat says:
“My gratitude first goes to God for His countless blessings, then to our wise leadership, which has made people the heart of development; to Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, who paved the way for every Emirati woman; to my parents, who planted the very first seeds; to my own family, who support me through my busy schedule and celebrate my achievements; and to every colleague who has shared this journey in public health, because success has never been an individual accomplishment.”
She concludes her inspiring journey with the phrase that has become her signature and is well known among her audience:
“Until we meet again, my warmest wishes to you all.”
