Dr. Badriya Al Harmi is an Emirati physician, a daughter of this nation, a mother of three, and a woman shaped by many experiences—some joyful, others challenging—all of which contributed to the person she is today. Her journey into medicine began with a simple and clear dream: to become a doctor whose work would make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. Over time, she discovered that her passion extended beyond treating illness to understanding its causes, preventing it, and safeguarding community health. This realization led her to the field of public health, where she expanded her work into occupational health and community-based initiatives.

When Her Passion Expanded Beyond Treating Disease to Protecting Society

At the beginning of her medical studies, Dr. Al Harmi’s dream was simply to become a physician. However, during her clinical training and fieldwork, she found herself increasingly drawn to the broader picture of health. She would see a patient and ask herself: Why did this person reach this stage? Could the illness have been prevented? How can a single health policy or program protect thousands of people?

She found the answer in public health. She was captivated by a specialty that combines medicine, people, communities, and decision-making. While the public may not always see those working behind prevention programs, health policies, and community initiatives, their impact reaches every home and every individual. She loves this field because it allows her to work for people before they become patients—a role she considers one of the most meaningful aspects of medicine.

COVID-19: When Leadership Became Responsibility and Words Became Part of the Decision

Without a doubt, the COVID-19 pandemic was one of the most defining chapters of Dr. Al Harmi’s professional and personal life. She was at the forefront of the field response and experienced the pandemic firsthand from its earliest stages—from managing cases and outbreak clusters to working with public health teams and implementing preventive measures.

At the same time, she carried another responsibility: appearing before the public as one of the official spokespersons, explaining developments and offering reassurance during a period when information changed rapidly and uncertainty gripped the world. This experience taught her that leadership is not a title, that calmness is sometimes a responsibility in itself, and that in times of crisis, words can be just as important as decisions.

She also takes pride in many milestones throughout her career, including establishing occupational health services, leading health promotion programs and initiatives, contributing to the founding of the Emirates Public Health Association, participating in the UAE Government Leaders Program, and building a path in health media and writing. On a personal level, she believes her greatest achievement has been her ability to persevere and maintain balance among her many roles—as a mother, a physician, and an individual with dreams and ambitions of her own.

Challenges That Shaped a Stronger and More Mature Woman

Dr. Al Harmi has faced many challenges throughout her journey. One of the greatest was balancing multiple responsibilities: being a present and attentive mother, a dedicated physician, and a team leader, while also preserving her own identity amid these demanding roles.

There were difficult periods, intense workloads, and significant responsibilities. Like anyone else, she experienced moments of exhaustion. She does not believe strength means never feeling tired or vulnerable. Rather, she believes true strength lies in knowing when to rise again and how to keep moving forward despite hardships.

Her faith in God has always been a source of comfort and resilience during difficult times. She firmly believes that some of life’s toughest experiences do not come to break us, but to reveal strengths we never knew we possessed and to grant us levels of maturity and wisdom that could not have been achieved otherwise.

Emirati Women: From Empowerment to Responsibility and Shaping the Future

Dr. Al Harmi believes that the UAE has created an exceptional model for women’s empowerment. Today, Emirati women are no longer searching for a place at the table—they have already proven their presence in every field. They excel in medicine, science, space exploration, economics, and decision-making.

This success did not happen by chance. It is the result of a vision established since the founding of the nation and a firm belief that women are essential partners in building the country. She views empowerment not merely as a privilege, but as a responsibility. Women today should not only benefit from opportunities but transform them into achievements and pathways for future generations.

As for Arab women in general, she acknowledges that circumstances vary from one society to another. Yet she believes that education, knowledge, and personal development remain sources of strength that no one can take away.

When Fear Exists but Responsibility Is Greater

Among the many unforgettable moments of the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Al Harmi vividly remembers the early days when the entire world was living in uncertainty and fear, and frontline workers faced an evolving reality every single day.

After long hours at work, she often found herself standing outside her home before entering, wondering: Could I be carrying the virus to my children? She was a worried mother, just like any other mother. Yet the next day, she would return to the field and later stand before cameras to speak calmly to the public and offer reassurance.

That experience taught her an invaluable lesson: sometimes people do not choose the moment they become strong. Instead, circumstances place them before responsibilities that leave them no choice but to rise to the occasion. She was not fearless during the pandemic, but she believed her responsibility was greater than her fear—and that belief enabled her to continue serving her nation.

Family and Country: The Roots of Success and Sources of Strength

For Dr. Al Harmi, family is the foundation and the roots from which everything began. The values she learned at home—responsibility, respect for work, and compassion for others—have accompanied her throughout every stage of her life.

Her children have also been a profound source of strength, teaching her patience, love, resilience, and the importance of prioritizing what truly matters. She believes that success loses its meaning if one loses oneself—or the people one loves—along the way.

Professionally, she has encountered leaders, mentors, and colleagues who left a lasting impact on her life through their support, trust, and even the challenges they presented. She firmly believes that no one succeeds alone. Behind every successful milestone are people who believed in us, teams that shared responsibilities, and experiences that taught lessons no book ever could.

Above all, she is the daughter of a nation that provided its people with opportunities, a leadership that believed in Emirati women, and a country that encouraged her to dream, learn, and contribute. Much of what Emiratis have achieved today, she believes, is the result of that vision and trust.

Her Message to Emirati Women

Dr. Al Harmi shares a simple yet powerful message with every young woman: “Do not compare the first chapter of your story to the tenth chapter of someone else’s. Every woman has her own timing, journey, and circumstances. Some dreams may take longer to achieve, plans may change, and sometimes life requires us to start over. None of this means you are late or unsuccessful.”

She emphasizes the importance of continuous learning, personal growth, and building a sense of value that is not dependent on a title or position. Most importantly, she encourages women not to be afraid of dreaming big.

“We live in a country where nothing is impossible. In the UAE, ambition has no limits.”

From Seeking the Next Position to Seeking Lasting Impact

Over the years, Dr. Al Harmi’s understanding of ambition has evolved. Early in her career, she often asked herself: What is the next step? What is the next position? Today, the question is different:

What impact will remain?

She aspires to continue advancing health awareness, promoting public health, and developing health communication in a more human-centered and relatable way. Writing also holds a special place in her life, and she increasingly believes that stories and human experiences can often communicate messages that statistics alone cannot.

She also hopes to play a greater role in supporting and empowering young professionals in public health. To her, one of the most rewarding stages of success is reaching a point where the goal is no longer to advance alone, but to help others advance alongside you.

On Emirati Women’s Day… Thank You to a Nation That Believed in Women and Gave Them Opportunities

On Emirati Women’s Day, Dr. Badriya Al Harmi expresses her gratitude to her homeland and its leadership for believing in Emirati women and providing them with trust and opportunity. She believes Emirati women are fortunate to live in a country that does not ask whether a woman is capable—it gives her the opportunity to demonstrate what she can achieve.

She emphasizes that Emirati women today carry both a legacy and a responsibility. The progress they have achieved was not the result of an individual journey but the outcome of a national endeavor. Their role now is to preserve these accomplishments and build upon them for future generations.

She also pays tribute to every woman who works quietly behind the scenes, noting that not all achievements are visible and not all acts of heroism are celebrated publicly. There is a mother raising a generation, a physician caring for her patients, and a teacher shaping the future. From the heart, she salutes every woman whose contributions may not always be seen but who makes a genuine difference in the lives of those around her.

“Build a Vessel from Kindness and Let It Sail”… A Book Inspired by the Belief That Goodness Never Goes to Waste

After years of work and life experiences, Dr. Badriya Al Harmi learned that a person is not defined by a title, position, or academic degree. What truly remains is the impact we leave on the lives of others.

We are the sum of the experiences we have lived, the people we have loved, the challenges we have overcome, and the good we have tried to leave behind. For this reason, she chose the title of her first book, “Build a Vessel from Kindness and Let It Sail”, because she firmly believes that kindness never goes to waste.

According to her philosophy, we build a vessel of goodwill and set it free without expecting anything in return, allowing it to reach someone precisely when they need it most. Acts of kindness endure, their impact continues, and they often return to us one day in ways more beautiful than we could ever imagine.

Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak’s Initiative “Mother of the Nation” “We Will Emerge Stronger and Better”… A Culture of Continuous Growth and Meaningful Impact

For Dr. Badriya Al Harmi, the slogan “We Will Emerge Stronger and Better” represents far more than a desire to achieve greater accomplishments. It embodies a deeply rooted culture of continuous improvement, responsibility, and the pursuit of positive impact in every role we undertake.

On a personal level, the slogan inspires her to keep learning, developing herself, and embracing challenges as opportunities for growth and experience. Within the family, she views it as a reminder that women should serve as role models for their children, nurturing values, diligence, and loyalty to their country.

Professionally, it reflects a commitment to delivering one’s best with integrity and excellence, recognizing that the quality of one’s work is what truly makes a difference in people’s lives.

Nationally, the slogan reflects the UAE’s vision of placing investment in people at the center of development. It reinforces the belief that women are essential partners in shaping the future and that their excellence is an extension of the nation’s own success and leadership.

To Every Woman Aspiring to Be Among “The Strongest and the Best”: Make Excellence a Habit

Dr. Al Harmi’s message to every Emirati woman is simple yet powerful: believe in your abilities and make excellence a habit rather than a temporary destination.

She believes true success is not measured by titles or positions but by the impact we leave on others, the sincerity we bring to our work, and our ability to balance ambition, family, and values.

Her advice to women is: “Do not fear challenges. Every experience shapes you into a stronger and more experienced version of yourself. Let serving your country be the purpose that guides your steps, because every achievement you accomplish becomes a contribution to the UAE’s journey of progress.”

Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, “Mother of the Nation”… An Inspiration and a Legacy of Women’s Empowerment

The journey of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, “Mother of the Nation,” has been a source of inspiration for every Emirati woman. Through her vision, she established the belief that women’s empowerment is not merely a slogan but a comprehensive national project built on education, capacity-building, opportunity creation, and confidence in women’s capabilities across all fields.

Today, Emirati women are reaping the rewards of this vision through their achievements and presence both within the UAE and internationally.

Dr. Badriya Al Harmi offers this heartfelt message to Her Highness:

“Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you for believing in Emirati women and providing them with the trust and support needed to become true partners in the nation’s development journey. What Emirati women have achieved today is the result of a visionary leadership that believed in them and invested in their potential. This legacy will remain a source of pride and inspiration for generations to come, God willing.”

When Success Becomes the Impact That Endures

After years of professional experience and personal growth, Dr. Badriya Al Harmi has come to understand that people are not defined by positions, titles, or certificates. Positions change, titles evolve, and achievements are recorded—but what truly remains is the impact we leave behind in the lives of others.

From a physician dedicated to protecting people’s health before illness strikes, to a mother, leader, and author who believes that kindness never goes to waste, Dr. Al Harmi remains convinced that the greatest legacy a person can leave is not what they possessed, but what they gave—not what was said about them, but the positive impact they left in the hearts and lives of others.
