Samya Mohammed Mandal: From Shyness to Leadership – An Emirati Journey of Confidence, Culture, and Positive Impact

My journey did not begin with an award or a leadership position. It started with the hesitant steps of a shy Emirati young woman entering the workforce for the first time in a male-dominated environment, facing daily challenges that required confidence and strong communication skills. Every day, I learned how to overcome my fears and believe more in my abilities.

At that time, I never imagined that the same young woman who started her career in customer service would one day stand in front audiences of all ages, presenting Emirati culture across the UAE. Nor did I imagine that I would lead teams and initiatives, promote happiness and quality of life before they became established institutional concepts, and receive recognition at the national level.

My name is Samya Mohammed Mandal, and I currently work as a Cultural Programs Specialist at the Ministry of Culture. I have more than 23 years of professional experience.

I began my career at HSBC Bank, where I worked in various banking fields, including retail and corporate banking, customer relationship management, financial solutions, and customer service. This experience strengthened my communication, problem-solving, relationship management, and customer service skills, laying the foundation for my professional growth.

One of the achievements I am most proud of during that period was successfully completing a specialized professional assessment that simulated real customer interactions. My performance was selected as a training model and presented to HSBC employees and trainees worldwide after I successfully transformed a difficult customer interaction into a positive experience that strengthened the customer’s relationship with the bank. This was one of the first milestones that truly built my professional confidence.

My journey has been full of challenges, from balancing work and studies for many years to continuously seeking personal and professional development. My faith in God, my parents’ prayers, dedication, commitment to serving the community, love of giving, and willingness to seize opportunities have all shaped my character and career.

Education became another important milestone after I joined the government sector. I enrolled at the Higher Colleges of Technology, excelled academically, and graduated with First Class Honors. I had the honor of being recognized by Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak (“Mother of the Nation”), receiving an academic excellence award that included a commemorative gold bar bearing the image of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

I later continued my education at the American University of Ras Al Khaimah, graduating with Magna Cum Laude honors.

At the Ministry of Culture, I participated in several impactful national projects, including the “Al Naliyah” initiative, which traveled across all Emirates promoting authentic Emirati values and national identity. As a facilitator, I delivered sessions on Emirati etiquette, majlis traditions, and hospitality, engaging audiences of all ages through interactive cultural experiences that strengthened appreciation for Emirati heritage.

Another experience I deeply value was representing the Ministry of Culture at the Souq Okaz Festival in Taif, Saudi Arabia, for nearly one month. I supervised the participation of Emirati artisans and productive families, coordinated their daily needs, organized activities for children, and helped showcase Emirati heritage and traditional crafts to thousands of visitors. This experience enhanced my leadership, organizational, teamwork, and cultural communication skills, while reinforcing my belief that culture is not merely about events—it is a message, an identity, and a bridge between people.

I also take pride in mentoring university and college students by sharing practical knowledge in event management and exhibition design. One of my greatest achievements was seeing one of my trainees establish her own event management business after graduation, using the skills she developed during her training. For me, this represents one of the greatest forms of positive impact a person can leave on others.

Among my proudest achievements at the Ministry of Culture was receiving the “Promising Executive – HR Knight” award from the Federal Authority for Government Human Resources across all UAE federal entities, and being honored by His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan. This recognition reflected years of continuous learning, dedication, and excellence.

I was also honored by my colleagues through the Ministry’s employee recognition and rewards system, making the recognition especially meaningful because it came from people who worked closely with me and witnessed my contributions firsthand.

Another defining milestone was being nominated by the Minister of Culture to participate in the National Program for Happiness and Wellbeing, launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. I completed an intensive one-year leadership program alongside government professionals from federal and local entities, including a specialized learning journey to Australia. I later graduated and received my certificate from His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum as a certified Chief Happiness and Wellbeing Officer.

Throughout my career, I have always believed that giving should extend beyond daily work. Long before workplace happiness became widely recognized, I initiated employee wellbeing activities, appreciation programs, and social initiatives that strengthened workplace relationships and created a positive organizational culture.

I also contributed to community initiatives supporting laborers, national volunteer campaigns, and humanitarian activities that promoted belonging, appreciation, and social responsibility. My goal was never simply to organize an event but to create lasting human impact and ensure employees felt valued, supported, and motivated.

Outside of work, volunteering has always been an important part of my life. It has allowed me to lead numerous community, cultural, and humanitarian initiatives because I believe serving society is both a responsibility and an honor.

Today, when I reflect on my journey, I realize that success is not measured by positions or awards. It comes from sincerity, dedication, precision, organization, continuous learning, and believing that every opportunity is a new door to growth. Above all, my parents’ prayers have always been—and continue to be—a source of strength and inspiration.

UAE Women’s Day 2026 – “We Will Show Our Strongest and Best”

The initiative launched by Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak (“Mother of the Nation”) under the slogan “We Will Show Our Strongest and Best” for UAE Women’s Day 2026 holds deep personal meaning for me.

To me, this slogan represents confidence, ambition, and responsibility. Personally, it reminds me that true strength begins with faith in God, belief in oneself, and viewing every challenge as an opportunity for growth.

Within the family, I believe women are the foundation of society. When women are strengthened through education, values, and character, they positively influence their children, families, and communities.

Professionally, this slogan has reflected my philosophy from the beginning. Excellence is not about competing with others but about becoming better than I was yesterday through continuous learning, creativity, sincerity, and making a positive impact.

Nationally, Emirati women have proven themselves to be key partners in the UAE’s development. Today, their role extends beyond participation—they are helping shape the future. This places a responsibility on all of us to represent the UAE and its leadership with excellence.

Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak remains a lifelong source of inspiration for every Emirati woman. Through her vision and unwavering support, she has empowered women to excel in education, leadership, and decision-making while preserving their identity and values. Her journey has inspired me to continue learning, serving my country, and believing that Emirati women can achieve excellence whenever they are given the opportunity.

I extend my deepest gratitude to Her Highness for her visionary leadership and continued support in creating generations of capable, confident women. I pray that God grants her continued health and rewards her for all she has done for the UAE and its people.

If my journey has taught me anything, it is that strength is not something we are born with—it is built through faith, education, hard work, generosity, and perseverance. This is the true meaning of “We Will Show Our Strongest and Best”: presenting the best version of ourselves, using our success to empower others, serve our nation, and leave a legacy that future generations will be proud of.

On the occasion of UAE Women’s Day, I affirm that Emirati women deserve recognition every day—not just one day a year. They are partners in national development, builders of future generations, and lasting sources of inspiration.

To the young women of the UAE, I encourage you to believe in yourselves, seize every opportunity, and remember that ambition, determination, and perseverance can transform dreams into achievements that make a lasting difference.

My message to every Emirati woman is simple: believe in your abilities and never fear beginnings or challenges. Every great achievement starts with a small step. Learn continuously, work sincerely, and strive to leave a positive impact wherever you are. True value is not measured by titles or positions, but by the knowledge, kindness, hope, and inspiration you leave in the lives of others. The strongest and best woman is the one who uplifts herself while helping those around her rise as well.
