Leila Saeed Al Marzouqi… From the Heart of the UAE Energy Sector to Global Leadership… An Emirati Woman Who Turned Courage and Innovation into a Success Story Inspiring Future Generations
Success is often measured by promotions, awards, or job titles printed on business cards. However, the defining milestones in a professional journey are rarely created by titles alone. They are usually shaped by decisions that require the greatest courage moments when a person chooses the unknown over comfort, growth over familiarity, and purpose over preconceived expectations.
For Leila Saeed Al Marzouqi, one of these defining moments came after ten successful years at ADNOC. By that time, she had built a career path that many engineers aspire to achieve throughout their professional lives. She worked on some of the UAE’s most important strategic oil and gas assets, led multidisciplinary engineering teams, and earned the trust of senior leadership.
She became the first leader of a Petroleum Engineering team in her organization and one of the youngest leaders in Petroleum Engineering and Production at ADNOC Offshore. In 2021, she received the Best Female Team Leader Award across ADNOC Operating Companies, an achievement that reflected her technical excellence, leadership capabilities, and ability to lead teams and deliver results.
For many people, this would have represented the ultimate destination. For Leila, however, it was the beginning of a new chapter.
Her decision to leave ADNOC was not driven by dissatisfaction, but by curiosity and a desire to expand her knowledge. After a decade of specializing in the technical aspects of the energy industry, she wanted to understand what existed beyond engineering: customer perspectives, business strategies, technology roadmaps, and the global decisions shaping the future of the energy sector.
This decision completely reshaped the direction of her professional journey.
Beginnings That Reflect the Journey of a Nation
Before joining one of the world’s largest energy technology companies, Leila’s journey reflected, at its core, the remarkable transformation of the United Arab Emirates.
She was among the first generations of Emirati female engineers to graduate with a degree in Petroleum Engineering from the United Arab Emirates University. At a time when this field was largely dominated by men, her choice of specialization was not simply an academic decision; it reflected the confidence the UAE placed in its daughters to contribute to one of the country’s most important and strategic sectors.
This confidence was not accidental. It was an extension of the vision of the late founding father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may he rest in peace, who believed that women are essential partners in building the nation.
It was further strengthened by the support and vision of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, “Mother of the Emirates,” whose continuous efforts transformed women’s empowerment opportunities into a tangible reality.
Leila believes this national vision shaped her mindset even before entering the workforce:
“I never felt that I needed permission to dream bigger. I grew up believing that hard work opens all doors of opportunity, and this belief has stayed with me throughout my professional journey.”
A Decade of Excellence at ADNOC
When Leila joined ADNOC, she found herself surrounded by leaders who recognized her potential before focusing on limitations.
Over ten years, she worked in reservoir engineering, production optimization, field development, and integrated reservoir management. She contributed to strategic projects supporting the UAE’s long-term vision for the energy sector.
Engineering taught her how to manage complex technical challenges, but leadership taught her an even more important lesson: the strongest teams are built on trust.
Her colleagues describe her as calm under pressure, passionate about learning, and someone who listens carefully before speaking. She believes the best solutions do not come from one individual, but from bringing together diverse perspectives around a common goal.
These qualities naturally guided her toward leadership positions.
During her career at ADNOC, she contributed to several pioneering engineering initiatives, including:
• Implementing the first intelligent well completion system at the SARB field.
• Contributing to the first application of sand perforation technology in the UAE.
• Participating early in her career in designing advanced completion systems for extended-reach wells as part of Upper Zakum field projects.
These projects required exceptional levels of innovation, precision, and coordination among different disciplines.
However, when asked about her greatest achievements, Leila rarely begins by talking about technology. Instead, she talks about people:
“Every achievement I am proud of happened because people believed in me, challenged me, and gave me trust and responsibility. Leadership is never an individual achievement.”
Best Female Team Leader Across ADNOC
One of the most significant recognition moments in her professional journey came when she received the Best Female Team Leader Award in 2021 across ADNOC Operating Companies.
However, Leila did not view the award simply as a personal success. She saw it as a reflection of an organizational and national culture that invests in people, empowers women, and believes leadership is achieved through competence and merit — not gender.
A New Beginning at Halliburton
After a decade of technical and leadership achievements, Leila made a bold decision to begin a new journey, starting relatively from the beginning in a different field.
Joining the global company Halliburton gave her the opportunity to see the energy industry from a completely different perspective.
For the first time in many years, she found herself learning again — not because she lacked experience, but because she wanted to expand it.
Today, she serves as an Account Manager, working at the intersection of engineering, business strategy, customer relationship management, modern technologies, and commercial leadership.
Her role goes beyond sales. She works with clients to solve complex technical challenges, supports strategic business development, collaborates with product development and technology teams, contributes to innovation initiatives, and works with global experts to provide practical solutions across different stages of the energy value chain.
This transition required a different kind of confidence.
While technical expertise remained essential, success increasingly depended on understanding people, building trusted relationships, and connecting engineering solutions with business value.
She explains:
“Engineering teaches you how to solve problems, while the business world teaches you how to understand people. True leadership requires both.”
Continued Global Success
Leila’s success at Halliburton came quickly. During her first year, she received the Rising Star Award in recognition of her contributions, adaptability, and ability to create value within a global organization.
She was also nominated for several future leadership development programs, including the Emerging Leaders Program and specialized programs aimed at preparing Emirati women for future leadership roles.
Despite these recognitions, awards have never been her ultimate goal. She sees every honor as a reminder that someone placed their trust in her — and that trust is a responsibility before it is an achievement.
Empowering the Next Generation
Alongside her professional achievements, Leila dedicates an important part of her time to supporting and mentoring young talents and encouraging more Emirati women to pursue careers in science, engineering, technology, and leadership.
She believes the future of energy belongs to those who combine:
• Technical knowledge
• Business awareness
• Digital innovation
• Emotional intelligence
• Continuous learning
Her journey embodies this belief:
From being among the first Emirati women graduates in Petroleum Engineering, to becoming the first Petroleum Engineering team leader in her organization, leading multidisciplinary teams at ADNOC, winning the Best Female Team Leader Award, moving to a global institution, receiving the Rising Star Award at Halliburton, and contributing to global business development, innovation, and customer solutions.
Every chapter of her journey has been driven by one belief:
“Growth begins the moment we choose courage over comfort.”
“We Will Appear Stronger and Better” Initiative – Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Mother of the Emirates
Within the framework of the “We Will Appear Stronger and Better” initiative, Leila Saeed Al Marzouqi represents the Emirati woman who transformed empowerment into responsibility, success into a message, and leadership into sustainable impact.
Her story is not only about personal achievement; it reflects the journey of a nation that believed in the abilities of Emirati women and opened doors for excellence and meaningful participation in building the future.
Today, Emirati women have become essential partners in the nation’s development and progress.
Leila believes that true legacy is not measured by the number of positions held or the size of awards received, but by the impact a person leaves on others’ lives and the ability to inspire future generations and give them confidence to pursue their dreams.
From this perspective, the “We Will Appear Stronger and Better” initiative carries a powerful message: the strength of Emirati women lies in their continuous contribution, and the greatest achievements are those that open doors for those who come after them.
Individual success becomes an extension of national success, while the UAE remains a leading model in empowering women and creating inspiring leaders.
Leila also extends her sincere gratitude and appreciation to Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, “Mother of the Emirates,” whose wise vision and continuous support have formed the foundation of Emirati women’s empowerment journey and strengthened women’s role as active partners in development and decision-making.
She emphasizes that the achievements and influential presence of Emirati women today across various fields are a continuation of a strong national approach that believed in their capabilities, provided them with confidence and opportunities, and enabled them to innovate, excel, and serve their nation with distinction.
