I am Fatima Khalifa Al Mannaei, an Emirati sign language expert, certified legal sign language interpreter, international trainer, media professional, and content creator. For more than twenty years, I have dedicated my work to empowering Deaf people and People of Determination. My journey with sign language began in 2002, followed by the start of my professional career in the field in 2003. Since then, sign language has become an essential part of my life, identity, and a mission I deeply believe in. Throughout my career, I have worked across various fields, including interpretation, training, government work, community and volunteer initiatives, media, and content creation. I am also proud to have become the first certified Emirati legal sign language interpreter in the UAE, working in legal interpretation before the Dubai Courts, an experience I consider one of the most significant milestones of my professional journey. I was also among the early Emirati female content creators to consistently provide content in sign language through social media platforms, because I have always believed that Deaf people have the right to see their language present in the media, society, and public services—not only on special occasions. My journey has never been simply a profession; it has been a mission that began with a small sign and continued for more than twenty years.

When an Unexpected Beginning Becomes a Passion and a Purpose

The true beginning of my journey was with my husband, Mohammed Hassan Ahli, who was the first person to teach me sign language and became my first teacher in this field. The story began during our engagement in 2002, when he taught me a few signs so that we could have our own special way of communicating that people around us would not understand. At first, they were only simple signs, but I found myself drawn to this language, and my curiosity gradually developed into a genuine passion. I then began researching, learning, reading, and developing myself further. When I started working and came into direct contact with the Deaf community, I realized that sign language was not simply a beautiful language; it was a real necessity and a fundamental right in communication. I began attending specialized courses and exploring the field more deeply, and with every experience, I became increasingly convinced that this was the path I wanted to pursue. What makes this journey particularly meaningful to me is that something that began as a private language between my husband and me transformed into a lifelong mission and a career spanning more than twenty years in service of Deaf people and People of Determination. I always say that my husband was the reason the journey began, while the Deaf community became the reason it continued.

An Achievement That Opened New Doors for Emirati Women in Sign Language

One of the most important milestones in my professional life was becoming the first Emirati legal sign language interpreter in the UAE and working as a legal interpreter before the Dubai Courts. This experience carried enormous responsibility because legal interpretation is not simply about transferring words; it is a responsibility connected to people’s rights, cases, and situations that may have life-changing consequences. I am also proud of a career that began in 2003 in the service of Deaf people and People of Determination, as well as my work in training and preparing employees and frontline service staff on how to communicate effectively with them. I have also participated in numerous community and government initiatives and programs aimed at enhancing their quality of life and supporting their inclusion. Another milestone I deeply value was entering the field of media and content creation, where I focused on producing educational and awareness-based content in sign language and bringing this language to a wider audience. To me, true achievement cannot be measured only by a title, certificate, or position; it is measured by the impact I leave on a person’s life or by changing an idea within society.

When the Road Is Not Paved, Perseverance Becomes the Compass

When I first entered this field, awareness of sign language and the profession of interpretation was not what it is today, and opportunities, resources, and training programs were not as widely available as they are now. I had to continuously learn, research, and develop myself while proving that sign language is a professional discipline with its own standards, responsibilities, and ethics, rather than simply a series of hand movements. I also faced challenges related to stereotypes surrounding Deaf people and People of Determination. Through my work, I realized that the challenge is often not within the individual, but within the surrounding environment when it is not prepared or sufficiently aware of their needs. I overcame these challenges through persistence, continuous learning, and fieldwork, without being afraid to enter a field in which there was not yet a significant Emirati female presence at the time. I have always believed that every new path needs someone willing to take the first step, even when the road has not yet been paved.

The Emirati Woman: From Proving Her Ability to Creating the Path for Others

Today, the Emirati woman has moved beyond the stage of proving her ability because she has already demonstrated her presence and competence across countless fields. We see Emirati women today in leadership, the economy, media, science, government, entrepreneurship, community work, and decision-making positions. I believe that the next stage should not be focused only on a woman’s individual success, but also on her role in opening doors for others, sharing her experience, and supporting future generations. True success, to me, is not about reaching the destination alone; it is about becoming a reason why the road becomes easier for those who come after me. Arab women in general possess tremendous talent and potential, and whenever they are given a supportive environment and fair opportunities, they demonstrate their ability to make a meaningful difference.

The Moment When Someone Feels Understood Is One of the Greatest Meanings of This Mission

Over more than twenty years, I have experienced countless moments, but one of the most touching is when a Deaf person meets me and realizes that there is someone in front of them who can communicate with them directly in their own language. It may seem like a simple moment, but for someone who is accustomed to struggling to communicate their needs or thoughts, it can mean everything. It tells them that they are understood and that someone is willing to listen to them in a different way. Every time I see the impact of sign language on a person or situation—whether in court, at work, during training, or even through a simple piece of content on social media—I am reminded of the real reason I chose to continue in this field.

Behind Every Successful Journey Are People Who Believed in the Beginning and a Mission That Sustained the Journey

My husband was the first person who opened the door to sign language for me, and he had a significant influence at the beginning of this journey. My family, as well as everyone who believed in me and encouraged me to continue, also played an important role in my career. I cannot speak about my success without acknowledging the Deaf community itself. To me, they have been teachers and partners throughout this journey, and from them I have learned so much about communication, difference, patience, and independence. The UAE and its wise leadership have also had a profound impact by creating an environment that encourages women, supports People of Determination, and provides everyone with opportunities for growth and achievement. Every experience I have gone through, whether easy or difficult, has contributed to shaping the person I am today.

To Every Young Woman: Do Not Wait for Perfect Circumstances—Create Your Impact Where You Are

My message to every girl and young woman is: do not wait for circumstances to become perfect before you begin. Start with what you have, learn, experiment, make mistakes, try again, and continue developing yourself. Never allow anyone to define the limits of your dreams or tell you that a particular field is not for you. I also encourage young women not to pursue fame or visibility alone, but to pursue impact. People may forget what you said, what you wore, or how many followers you had, but they will not forget the impact you left on their lives.

The Future I Aspire To: A Stronger Presence for Sign Language and Technology That Serves People

My ambition is to continue promoting sign language and Deaf culture in a broader and more professional way, while contributing to greater awareness of the rights of People of Determination, strengthening their independence, and improving their access to services. I also aspire to develop training programs and digital content that make use of modern technologies and artificial intelligence to facilitate accessibility and communication. Another one of my goals is to pass on the knowledge and experience I have gained over more than twenty years to a new generation of interpreters, specialists, and content creators. I hope that one day sign language will become a natural and integrated part of media, services, education, and society, rather than something we remember only on special occasions.

A Nation That Believes in Women and the Responsibility to Turn Opportunities into Achievements

I say to every Emirati woman: we are fortunate to live in a nation that believes in women and has given them the confidence, space, and opportunities to work, succeed, and participate in shaping the future. After more than twenty years, I can say that I did not choose sign language merely as a profession; I chose it as a mission. My story began with simple signs I learned from my husband, and those signs eventually became a long journey of learning, professional work, interpretation, training, media, and community service. My greatest dream is to see a day when a Deaf person no longer has to ask, “Does anyone understand me?” Instead, they will find an aware and inclusive society, accessible services, and employees who are able to communicate with them and respect their language and needs. When that day comes, I will feel that the mission I began years ago has achieved a significant part of its purpose.

On a family level, it means raising our children to understand that women are essential partners in building both the family and the nation, and that a woman’s success does not conflict with her family role but complements it. Professionally, it means transforming our experiences and achievements into meaningful impact and opening the way for those who come after us. Nationally, I believe that the strength of Emirati women is part of the strength of the UAE itself, and every achievement made by an Emirati woman contributes to the achievements of our nation.

حين تتحول البداية العفوية إلى شغف ورسالة

كانت البداية الحقيقية مع زوجي محمد حسن أهلي، فهو أول من علّمني لغة الإشارة، وكان معلمي الأول في هذا المجال. بدأت القصة خلال فترة خطوبتنا عام 2002، عندما علّمني بعض الإشارات لتكون بيننا طريقة تواصل خاصة لا يفهمها من حولنا، وكانت في البداية إشارات بسيطة، لكنني وجدت نفسي منجذبة لهذه اللغة، وبدأ فضولي يتحول شيئاً فشيئاً إلى شغف حقيقي. بعد ذلك بدأت أبحث وأتعلم وأقرأ وأطور نفسي بصورة أكبر، ثم عندما بدأت عملي واحتككت بشكل مباشر بمجتمع الصم، أدركت أن لغة الإشارة ليست مجرد لغة جميلة، بل حاجة حقيقية وحق أساسي في التواصل. بدأت بعدها الالتحاق بالدورات المتخصصة والتعمق أكثر في المجال، ومع كل تجربة كنت أزداد اقتناعاً بأن هذا هو المسار الذي أريد أن أكمل فيه. ومن الجميل بالنسبة لي أن قصة بدأت كلغة خاصة بيني وبين زوجي تحولت إلى رسالة عمر، وإلى مسيرة امتدت لأكثر من عشرين عاماً في خدمة الصم وأصحاب الهمم، ولذلك أقول دائماً إن زوجي كان سبب البداية، ومجتمع الصم كان سبب الاستمرار

إنجاز فتح أبواباً جديدة أمام المرأة الإماراتية في مجال لغة الإشارة

من أهم محطات حياتي المهنية اعتمادي كأول مترجمة قانونية إماراتية للغة الإشارة على مستوى الدولة، وعملي كمترجمة قانونية أمام محاكم دبي، وكانت هذه التجربة مسؤولية كبيرة جداً بالنسبة لي؛ لأن الترجمة القانونية ليست مجرد نقل كلمات، بل مسؤولية مرتبطة بحقوق أشخاص وقضايا ومواقف قد تكون مصيرية. كما أفتخر بمسيرتي التي بدأت منذ عام 2003 في مجال خدمة الصم وأصحاب الهمم، وبعملي في التدريب وتأهيل الموظفين وواجهات الخدمة على كيفية التواصل معهم، والمشاركة في العديد من المبادرات والبرامج المجتمعية والحكومية التي تهدف إلى تعزيز جودة حياتهم ودمجهم. ومن المحطات التي أعتز بها أيضاً دخولي مجال الإعلام وصناعة المحتوى، حيث حرصت على تقديم محتوى توعوي وتعليمي بلغة الإشارة، والوصول بهذه اللغة إلى جمهور أوسع. وبالنسبة لي، الإنجاز الحقيقي لا يختصر في لقب أو شهادة أو منصب، بل في الأثر الذي أتركه في حياة إنسان أو في تغيير فكرة داخل المجتمع

عندما يكون الطريق غير ممهد… يصبح الإصرار هو البوصلة

عندما بدأت في هذا المجال لم يكن الوعي بلغة الإشارة ومهنة الترجمة كما هو اليوم، ولم تكن الفرص أو الموارد أو البرامج التدريبية متاحة بالشكل الذي نراه حالياً، وكان عليّ أن أتعلم باستمرار، وأن أبحث وأطور نفسي، وأن أثبت أن لغة الإشارة تخصص مهني له أصول ومسؤوليات وأخلاقيات، وليست مجرد حركات باليد. كما واجهت تحديات مرتبطة بالصور النمطية تجاه الصم وأصحاب الهمم، وأدركت من خلال عملي أن المشكلة في كثير من الأحيان ليست في الشخص نفسه، بل في البيئة المحيطة به عندما لا تكون مهيأة أو واعية باحتياجاته. كنت أتجاوز هذه التحديات بالاستمرار والتعلم والعمل الميداني، وعدم الخوف من أن أبدأ في مجال لم يكن فيه حضور إماراتي نسائي كبير في ذلك الوقت، وأؤمن دائماً بأن الطريق الجديد يحتاج إلى شخص يبدأ أول خطوة، حتى لو لم تكن الطريق ممهّدة

المرأة الإماراتية… من إثبات القدرة إلى صناعة الطريق للآخرين

المرأة الإماراتية اليوم تجاوزت مرحلة إثبات القدرة، لأنها أثبتت حضورها وكفاءتها في مختلف المجالات، فنراها اليوم في القيادة، والاقتصاد، والإعلام، والعلوم، والعمل الحكومي، وريادة الأعمال، والعمل المجتمعي، وفي مواقع صنع القرار. وأرى أن المرحلة المقبلة يجب ألا تكون فقط عن نجاح المرأة كفرد، بل عن دورها في فتح الطريق لغيرها، ومشاركة خبرتها، ودعم الأجيال القادمة، فالنجاح الحقيقي بالنسبة لي ليس أن أصل وحدي، بل أن أكون سبباً في أن تصبح الطريق أسهل لمن تأتي بعدي. أما المرأة العربية عموماً، فهي تمتلك طاقات وقدرات كبيرة، وكلما أتيحت لها بيئة داعمة وفرص عادلة، أثبتت حضورها وقدرتها على صنع الفرق

لحظة يشعر فيها الإنسان بأنه مفهوم… هي من أعظم معاني الرسالة

خلال أكثر من عشرين عاماً مرت عليّ مواقف كثيرة، لكن من أكثر اللحظات التي تلمسني دائماً عندما يقابلني شخص أصم ويكتشف أن أمامه شخصاً يستطيع التواصل معه مباشرة بلغته. قد تبدو هذه اللحظة بسيطة، لكنها بالنسبة لشخص اعتاد أن يجد صعوبة في إيصال احتياجاته أو أفكاره تعني الكثير، فهي تعني له أنه مفهوم، وأن هناك من يسمعه بطريقة مختلفة. وكل مرة أرى فيها أثر لغة الإشارة على شخص أو موقف، سواء في المحكمة أو العمل أو التدريب أو حتى من خلال محتوى بسيط على وسائل التواصل، أتذكر السبب الحقيقي الذي جعلني أستمر في هذا المجال

خلف كل رحلة ناجحة… أشخاص آمنوا بالبداية ورسالة صنعت الاستمرار

زوجي كان أول شخص فتح لي باب لغة الإشارة، وكان له أثر كبير في بداية هذه الرحلة، كما كان لعائلتي وكل شخص آمن بي وشجعني على الاستمرار دور مهم في مسيرتي. ولا يمكنني أن أتحدث عن نجاحي دون أن أذكر مجتمع الصم نفسه، فهم بالنسبة لي معلمون وشركاء في هذه الرحلة، ومنهم تعلمت الكثير عن التواصل والاختلاف والصبر والاستقلالية. كذلك كان لدولة الإمارات وقيادتنا الرشيدة أثر كبير في توفير بيئة تشجع المرأة وتدعم أصحاب الهمم وتفتح أمام الجميع فرصاً للنمو والإنجاز، وكل تجربة مررت بها، سواء كانت سهلة أو صعبة، ساهمت في تكوين الشخص الذي أنا عليه اليوم

إلى كل فتاة… لا تنتظري الظروف المثالية، اصنعي أثرك من حيث أنتِ

رسالتي لكل فتاة وشابة: لا تنتظري أن تكون الظروف مثالية حتى تبدئي، ابدئي بما لديكِ، تعلمي، جربي، أخطئي، أعيدي المحاولة، وطوري نفسك باستمرار، ولا تسمحي لأحد أن يحدد لكِ سقف أحلامكِ أو يخبركِ أن مجالاً معيناً ليس لكِ. وأقول لهن أيضاً: لا تبحثن فقط عن الشهرة أو الحضور، بل ابحثن عن الأثر، فقد ينسى الناس ما قلته أو ما ارتديته أو عدد المتابعين، لكنهم لن ينسوا الأثر الذي تركته في حياتهم

المستقبل الذي أطمح إليه… لغة إشارة أكثر حضوراً وتقنية تخدم الإنسان

طموحي أن أواصل العمل على نشر لغة الإشارة وثقافة الصم بصورة أوسع وأكثر احترافية، وأن أساهم في زيادة الوعي بحقوق أصحاب الهمم وتعزيز استقلاليتهم ووصولهم إلى الخدمات. كما أطمح إلى تطوير برامج تدريبية ومحتوى رقمي يستفيد من التقنيات الحديثة والذكاء الاصطناعي لتسهيل الوصول والتواصل، ومن أهدافي أيضاً نقل خبرتي التي امتدت لأكثر من عشرين عاماً إلى جيل جديد من المترجمين والمتخصصين وصناع المحتوى. وأتمنى أن يأتي يوم تصبح فيه لغة الإشارة جزءاً طبيعياً من الإعلام والخدمات والتعليم والمجتمع، وليس أمراً نتذكره فقط في المناسبات

وطن آمن بالمرأة… ومسؤولية تحويل الفرص إلى إنجازات

أقول لكل امرأة إماراتية: نحن محظوظات بوطن آمن بالمرأة ومنحها الثقة والمساحة والفرصة لكي تعمل وتنجح وتشارك في صناعة المستقبل، ولذلك فإن مسؤوليتنا اليوم أن نحول هذه الفرص إلى إنجازات حقيقية تخدم الوطن والمجتمع. وأتوجه بالشكر لقيادتنا الرشيدة، ولكل امرأة إماراتية سبقتنا وفتحت لنا باباً، ولكل شخص آمن بأن تمكين المرأة ليس مجرد شعار، بل استثمار في مستقبل وطن كامل

الحلم الأكبر… أن لا يسأل الأصم يوماً: «هل يوجد أحد يفهمني؟

بعد أكثر من عشرين عاماً، أستطيع أن أقول إنني لم أختر لغة الإشارة كمهنة فقط، بل اخترتها كرسالة. بدأت قصتي بإشارات بسيطة تعلمتها من زوجي، ثم تحولت تلك الإشارات إلى طريق طويل من التعلم والعمل والترجمة والتدريب والإعلام وخدمة المجتمع، وأكبر حلم بالنسبة لي أن يأتي يوم لا يضطر فيه الشخص الأصم إلى أن يسأل: «هل يوجد أحد يفهمني؟»، بل يجد مجتمعاً واعياً، وخدمات مهيأة، وموظفين قادرين على التواصل معه واحترام لغته واحتياجاته، وعندها سأشعر أن الرسالة التي بدأت منذ سنوات حققت جزءاً كبيراً من هدفها

بالنسبة لي، «بنظهر الأقوى والأفضل» ليس مجرد شعار احتفالي، بل رسالة ومسؤولية؛ فعلى المستوى الشخصي، يعني أن أواصل تطوير نفسي، وألا أكتفي بما حققته، لأن كل مرحلة نجاح يجب أن تكون بداية لمرحلة جديدة، وعلى المستوى الأسري، يعني أن نربي أبناءنا على أن المرأة شريك أساسي في بناء الأسرة والوطن، وأن نجاحها لا يتعارض مع دورها الأسري، بل يكمله، وعلى المستوى المهني، يعني أن نحول خبراتنا وإنجازاتنا إلى أثر، وأن نفتح الطريق لمن يأتي بعدنا، أما على المستوى الوطني، فأرى أن قوة المرأة الإماراتية جزء من قوة الإمارات نفسها، وكل إنجاز تحققه المرأة هو إضافة لإنجازات وطننا

أقول لكل امرأة تطمح لأن تكون من «الأقوى والأفضل»: لا تقارني نفسكِ بالآخرين، بل اجعلي هدفك دائماً أن تكوني اليوم أفضل من نفسكِ بالأمس. القوة لا تعني أنكِ لن تتعثري، بل تعني أنكِ تعرفين كيف تعودين بعد كل تعثر. استثمري في علمك، وخبرتك، وشخصيتك، واحرصي أن يكون اسمك مرتبطاً بقيمة وأثر قبل أن يرتبط بالشهرة أو الظهور، وقد يكون الطريق الذي تبدأينه اليوم هو الطريق الذي ستسير فيه مئات الفتيات من بعدك

أم الإمارات… رؤية جعلت طموح المرأة الإماراتية حقاً طبيعياً
