Samya Y. Ismail: When a Childhood Passion for Reading Becomes an Achievement that Serves the Future of the UAE

Early Beginnings: A Childhood Shaped by Culture, Reading, and Openness
Samya’s story began in Sharjah, specifically in the Al Jazzat area (formerly Al Riqqa), where her personality was shaped in a home that valued education and a neighborhood rich in cultural diversity. Growing up among families from several countries gave her an early appreciation for different cultures and a deep respect for diversity. Her childhood revolved around Sharjah’s cultural scene. Living close to the Cultural Palace, she regularly attended theatrical performances with her uncle. Alongside her sister, she participated in the popular children’s television program Studio Al Atfal presented by “Uncle Jameel.” She fondly recalls reciting verses from the Holy Quran during one of the episodes, describing her happiness as greater than the studio itself could contain being on TV. Every Tuesday, she would ask her brother to buy her a copy of Majid Magazine, and her love for reading continued to grow through borrowing books and novels from her school library. She later convinced her mother to register her at the Children’s Center in Al Riqqa after it opened. These treasured childhood experiences laid the foundation for her passion for learning and her belief that life is a continuous journey self-development.
Science: A passion that Led to Nuclear Engineering
Science has always been Samya’s two greatest passion. After graduating from a bachelors degree in Biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (USA), she worked in the occupational health and safety. Her true calling emerged when the UAE announced its peaceful nuclear energy program, having been always fascinated by physics, she joined the nuclear sector. During her work in the nuclear sector, she attended many international training programs in Germany, Austria, Russian Federation, and Republic of Korea. Later, she was awarded a scholarship, from her employer, to pursue her master’s degree at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). During her studies, her academic excellence earned her the opportunity to co-edit part of an academic book chapter under Professor Man-Sung Yim, former nuclear engineering professor at KAIST. Seeing her name published among the contributors to a respected scientific reference became one of the proudest moments of her academic journey.

Words That Became a Responsibility
One of the defining moments in Samya’s life came when she was honored by Professor Yim, and one of the world’s leading nuclear experts and President of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Education and Research Center (NEREC) at KAIST. During the ceremony, he told her and her fellow award recipients:
“I see in you great determination and promising potential that will leave a lasting impact on your countries.” For Samya, these words were not simply praise—they became a responsibility. They inspired her to pursue a doctorate degree. She wanted to contribute even more to her country and the UAE’s national nuclear program.

When the Path Changes but the Destination Remains
One of the greatest challenges she faced was choosing between continuing her career and accepting an exceptional academic opportunity to pursue a PhD in Nuclear Engineering at Seoul National University.
She chose the academic opportunity because of her desire to deepen her expertise and better serve her country. However, unforeseen challenges prevented her from completing the program, leading her to return to the UAE. During this difficult period, she remembered advice given by Robert Swan, the first person in history to walk both the North and South Poles, when she asked him what if he couldn’t achieve his dream of reaching the poles: “I will change my path, not my destination.” These words became her guiding principle. Rather than abandoning her dream, she pursued another route and now is continuing her doctoral studies at the American University of Sharjah, proving that changing one’s path never means giving up on one’s destination.

Emirati Women: Strategic Partners in Building the Future
Samya believes the UAE has empowered women since its founding by providing them with every opportunity to excel.As a result, Emirati women have achieved remarkable success in fields such as nuclear engineering, artificial intelligence, space science, research, medicine, and politics. She believes Emirati women have become strategic partners in sustainable development thanks to visionary leadership that recognizes their abilities and supports them alongside men while preserving the country’s identity and values. Across the Arab world, she believes women are redefining their role—not merely seeking opportunities but creating them, driving innovation, and leaving their mark globally as skilled professionals and thoughtful leaders.
When Impact Becomes the Greatest Inspiration
The moments that inspire Samya the most are those when she discovers that something she has done has genuinely changed another person’s life. Whether through teaching, mentoring, professional guidance, or a simple act of kindness, she believes that positive impact often begins with a single word, gesture, or opportunity whose value may only become clear years later. For her, the greatest legacy anyone can leave behind is a positive influence on others.

His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi: A Source of Inspiration
Among the personalities who have most influenced her is His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah. She believes his vision created an environment where knowledge, literature, and culture could flourish. Throughout her childhood she experienced this vision firsthand through the Cultural Palace, children’s centers, public libraries, and Sharjah’s thriving cultural movement. Borrowing books by Al-Manfaluti from Sharjah Public Library introduced her to literature and lifelong learning. His lifelong commitment to knowledge taught her that education never ends and that sharing knowledge is a responsibility toward society and humanity. Family, Friends, Professors, and Volunteering. Samya believes her success is the result of many people who supported her. She credits her parents for their unwavering encouragement, her siblings for their constant support, and her childhood and university friends for standing beside her throughout important stages of her life. She also expresses gratitude to her professors in the Engineering Systems Management Program at the American University of Sharjah, whose mentorship strengthened her passion for research. Additionally, her volunteer work with the Safety and Emergency Society, where she serves as Director of Corporate Relations and Sustainability, has allowed her to learn from distinguished Emirati leaders while deepening her understanding of volunteerism and community service.
Her Message to all Women: Leave a Positive Impact Wherever You Are
On the occasion of UAE Women’s Day, Samya shares a simple yet powerful message: “Wherever you are, leave behind a positive impact.” She believes impact is not measured by titles or major achievements. It can begin with a kind word, shared knowledge, sincere work, or a compassionate action. Every woman, regardless of her profession, has the ability to positively influence her surroundings, her community, and her country. Her Ambition: Science in Service of the Nation Samya is currently focused on preparing her doctoral research proposal, hoping it will contribute to the advancement of the UAE. She also looks forward to future professional opportunities that allow her to give back to the country through research, innovation, and national development. For her, knowledge reaches its true value only when it becomes beneficial to people, society, and the nation.

For Samya, the slogan “We Will Show Our Strongest and Best” represents much more than a theme.
It symbolizes resilience, determination, and the belief that no matter how difficult circumstances become, those who live on this land will continue standing strong. True strength, she believes, is not the absence of challenges but the courage to face them, persevere, and continue building the future. The slogan reflects the UAE’s confidence that every challenge can be transformed into an opportunity for growth. Her Advice to Every Woman Who Aspires to Be Among the Strongest and Best Samya believes being among the strongest and best begins with positive thinking reflected in everyday words, actions, family life, and professional conduct. Real strength comes from within. It is demonstrated through the way a woman thinks, works, responds to challenges, serves her country, and inspires others through her achievements.

Samya believes Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak (“Mother of the Nation”) has established a global model for women’s empowerment. Her Highness has helped build generations of Emirati women leaders across every sector. Samya concludes with a heartfelt message of gratitude: “Words cannot fully describe the transformation Your Highness has brought to the empowerment of Emirati women. ساميه يعقوب إسماعيل .. حين يتحول شغف الطفولة بالقراءة إلى إنجاز يخدم مستقبل الإمارات

البدايات.. طفولة تشكلت بين الثقافة والقراءة والانفتاح على الآخر
بدأت حكاية ساميه في مدينة الشارقة، وتحديداً في منطقة الجزات “الرقة سابقاً” حيث تشكلت ملامح شخصيتها الأولى في بيت يشجع العلم، و«فريج» يحتفي بالتنوع الثقافي إذ كان جيرانها من دول عدة, ما منحها انفتاحاً مبكراً على تقبل الآخر وتقدير هذا الثراء الإنساني. وكانت ساميه منذ طفولتها في قلب الشارقة، فقد كان منزلها قريباً من قصر الثقافة، حيث كانت تحضر المسرحيات برفقة خالها، كما كانت تحضر مع شقيقتها برنامج «استديو الأطفال» الذي كان يقدمه «عمو جميل»، وتتذكر إحدى الحلقات التي بثت وتلت فيها آيات من القرآن الكريم، فتصف فرحتها آنذاك بأنها كانت أكبر من أن تتسع لها جدران الاستوديو. وكانت ترسل أخاها كل ثلاثاء لشراء مجلة «ماجد»، ثم توسع شغفها بالقراءة من خلال استعارة الكتب والروايات من مكتبة المدرسة، قبل أن تصر على والدتها للاشتراك في مركز الطفل في الرقة. وقد شكلت هذه الذكريات الدافئة أساس شخصيتها الشغوفة ورسخت لديها إيماناً بأن الحياة رحلة مستمرة من التعلم والتطوير
العلم.. شغف قادها إلى مجال الهندسة النووية
لطالما كان العلم شغف ساميه منذ الطفولة.بعد تخرجها من الثانوية العامة, نالت منحة رئاسية لدراسة الكيمياء الحيوية في جامعة ويسكونسن-ماديسون( الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية). بعد تخرجها,رجعت إلى وطنها الإمارات للعمل في مجال الصحة والسلامة المهنية ثم انضمت إلى القطاع النووي .أتاح لها خلالها عملها المشاركة في دورات تدريبية دولية، في ألمانيا, النمسا, روسيا, فنلندا, وجمهورية كوريا الجنوبية. ثم ابتُعثت لدراسة الماجستير في الهندسة النووية في المعهد الكوري المتقدم للعلوم والتكنولوجيا، وبفضل تميزها الأكاديمي، شاركت في كتابة جزء من فصل أكاديمي ضمن كتاب للبروفيسور «مان-سونغ يم»، وكانت رؤية اسمها بين المساهمين في هذا المرجع العلمي محطة مضيئة وفخراً كبيراً في مسيرتها
كلمة تحولت إلى مسؤولية.. محطة دفعتها نحو الدكتوراه
تعتبر ساميه أن تكريمها من قبل البروفيسور ييم، بروفيسور في الهندسة النووية ورئيس مركز التعليم والبحث في مجال عدم انتشار الأسلحة النووية في كايست-سابقا, كان من أبرز المحطات التي شكلت نقطة تحول في حياتها، خصوصاً عندما قال لها ولزملائها المكرمين: «أرى فيكم همماً عالية وإمكانات واعدة ستترك بصمة فارقة في أوطانها». ولم تكن تلك الكلمات بالنسبة إليها مجرد إشادة، بل تحولت إلى مسؤولية ونداء داخلي دفعاها إلى التفكير في استكمال الدكتوراه، والمساهمة بصورة أكبر في خدمة وطنها والمشروع الإماراتي النووي
حين يتغير الطريق.. ولا تتغير الوجهة
كان من أكبر التحديات التي واجهتها ساميه اتخاذ قرار مصيري بين الاستمرار في وظيفتها أو اختيار فرصة أكاديمية استثنائية لدراسة الدكتوراه في الهندسة النووية في جامعة سيؤول الوطنية العريقة، واختارت ساميه الفرصة بدافع رغبتها الصادقة في صقل خبراتها الأكاديمية والإسهام بشكل أعمق في مشروع محطة براكة للطاقة النووية، إلا أن ظروفاً وتحديات غير متوقعة حالت دون استمرار دراستها هناك، فقررت العودة إلى الإمارات. وفي تلك المرحلة المفصلية، استحضرت نصيحة «روبرت سوان»، أول إنسان يصل إلى القطبين الشمالي والجنوبي، عندما سألته ماذا ان لم يستطع تحقيق حلمه بالوصول الى القطبين؟ : «سأغير طريقي وليس الوجهة». وتحولت هذه الحكمة إلى بوصلة قادتها إلى مواصلة طريقها نحو العلم في الجامعة الأمريكية في الشارقة، مؤكدة أن تغيير المسار لا يعني التخلي عن الحلم، ما دامت الوجهة واضحة
المرأة الإماراتية.. شريك استراتيجي في صناعة المستقبل
تؤمن سامية بأن دولة الإمارات آمنت منذ تأسيسها إيماناً راسخاً بدور المرأة المحوري في مختلف مجالات الحياة، ووفرت لها كل سبل الدعم والتمكين، ما أتاح لها تحقيق إنجازات نوعية في مجالات دقيقة مثل الهندسة النووية والذكاء الاصطناعي والفضاء والبحث العلمي والطب والسياسة وغيرها. وترى أن المرأة الإماراتية أصبحت شريكاً استراتيجياً في مسيرة التنمية المستدامة، وأن الإماراتيين محظوظون بقيادة ملهمة تؤمن بقدرات المرأة وتدعم حضورها جنباً إلى جنب مع الرجل لبناء مجتمع أصيل متمسك بهويته وقيمه. وعلى المستوى العربي، ترى أن المرأة تعيد اليوم صياغة المشهد من خلال الجمع بين الأصالة والمعاصرة، فلم تعد تكتفي بالبحث عن الفرص، بل أصبحت صانعة لها ومحركاً للابتكار، وقادرة على ترك بصمتها عالمياً بوصفها كفاءة مهنية وقائدة واعية توازن بين مقتضيات العصر وطموحات المستقبل
حين يصبح الأثر هو مصدر الإلهام
من أكثر ما يؤثر في سامية تلك اللحظات التي يكتشف فيها الإنسان أن ما قدمه للآخرين ترك أثراً حقيقياً في حياتهم، سواء من خلال تجربة تعليمية أو مهنية أو موقف إنساني. فهي تؤمن بأن الأثر قد يبدأ من كلمة أو موقف أو دعم بسيط، ثم يكتشف الإنسان بعد سنوات أن ذلك الموقف كان له تأثير إيجابي عميق في حياة شخص آخر. وبالنسبة إليها، تكمن قيمة هذه اللحظات في أنها تمنح العمل معناه الحقيقي، إذ يدرك الإنسان أن ما قد يبدو بسيطاً بالنسبة إليه قد يكون مهماً للغاية بالنسبة لشخص آخر، وأن أجمل ما يمكن أن يتركه الإنسان خلفه هو أثر طيب يمتد إلى حياة الآخرين
صاحب السمو الشيخ الدكتور سلطان بن محمد القاسمي.. شخصية ملهمة صنعت بيئة للعلم والثقافة
في طليعة الشخصيات التي تلهم مسيرة سامية يأتي صاحب السمو الشيخ الدكتور سلطان بن محمد القاسمي، حفظه الله ورعاه، الذي ترى أن رؤيته تجلت في الصروح المعرفية والثقافية والتاريخية التي أسهمت في بناء بيئة حاضنة للعلم والثقافة. وكانت سامية شاهدة منذ طفولتها على هذه النهضة الثقافية، من خلال المسرح وقصر الثقافة ومركز الطفل واستديو الأطفال وزياراتها إلى مكتبة الشارقة العامة، حيث كانت استعارة كتب «المنفلوطي» نافذتها الأولى إلى عوالم الأدب والفكر. وترى أن هذه التجارب غرست في داخلها شغفاً لا يلين بالتعلم، وأن عطاء سموه الفكري وشغفه العلمي يمثلان لها نهجاً تعلمت منه أن العلم رحلة لا تعرف نهاية، وأن مشاركة المعرفة والعطاء المستدام لخدمة المجتمع والإنسانية مسؤولية وقيمة عليا

تؤمن سامية بأن مسيرتها لم تُبنَ بجهد فردي، بل شارك في تشكيلها أشخاص كثر كان لكل منهم أثره الخاص، وفي مقدمتهم والداها اللذان كان لهما الفضل الأكبر في دعمها وتشجيعها، وإخوتها الذين كانوا سنداً دائماً لها، وصديقات طفولتها وصديقات رحلة الدراسة في الولايات المتحدة اللواتي رافقنها في محطات مهمة وجعلن لكل تحدٍ معنى ولكل تجربة ذكرى. كما تدين بالفضل لدعم أساتذتها في برنامج إدارة النظم الهندسية بالجامعة الأمريكية في الشارقة، إلى جانب تجربتها في العمل التطوعي ضمن «جمعية السلامة وأمن الطوارئ»، حيث تتولى مسؤولية إدارة العلاقات المؤسسية والاستدامة، وهو ما أتاح لها فرصاً نوعية للتعلم من النخبة القيادية الإماراتية وتعميق فهمها للعمل التطوعي
